Tech Path

Recruiter accidently emailed me her secret internal selection guidelines.

It’s sad to see tech starting to become like doctor/lawyer type careers. The professionalization of the field means less innovation, and that I never could’ve entered it as I did back in the day.

That working your way up path is closed now. Unless you attended a top 10 school if you’re just getting started, forget a decent job. Requiring a CS degree for fucking around with CSS is like requiring a Master’s Degree for being a receptionist — but that’s the way the world is moving.

Soon, there will be the rich and the connected. And then all the rest.

Looked Up

Agreed. I think the same is true the other way too (or for same-sex couples). This tendency to let one’s self go is worse in women (or at least I notice more), but women who are like, “He should still love me even though I now weigh 500 pounds and am one with my couch!” seem to me to be fucking insane. Why would you think that?

And then men are castigated for caring that the woman who was 120 pounds and fit when they got together now can’t be distinguished from the herd if she gets too close to a group of bovines.

No thanks.

Alg Calc

Calculus is so, so much easier than algebra. It’s crazy we spend so much time on algebra which for most is both boring and nearly useless. We should cover algebra cursorily and then jump straight into calc and stats.

I’ll never be a math whiz and I’d’ve been far better off skipping anything beyond long division altogether, but I think if I hadn’t had to suffer through three years of useless algebra I would’ve done a lot better.

Clu

I get this is compelling but theyโ€™re the medium, theyโ€™re not the message. Itโ€™s a society of men who need dealing with, on and offline www.theguardian.com/commentisfre…

Y’all need to read your McLuhan, damn. So uneducated as are most journalists. And, well, everyone. Almost.

The smartphone/social media debate is one destined to be lost by those of us who are correct about how very harmful that combination has proved to be. Of course they together are a huge cognitohazard that is most harmful to younger people. And of course we will do nearly nothing about it as all the phone addicts leap out of the woodwork with iffy studies and anecdotes because addicts always need another hit. Anything that threatens that and their “convenience” they will be sure to slap down with great vigor.

Combine that with the lack of education and comprehension of how media and messages actually work and you get clown-level crap like the Bluesky sophistry above.

Thus Malthus

My argument for the compatibility of the abundance agenda with planetary boundaries is twofold:

1.) The Malthusian trap no longer exists except in the minds of degrowthers.

2.) Green energy abundance and dense, low-VMT cities are actually a precondition of achieving net zero.

Worse than that — the degrowthers are making every effort to resurrect the Malthusian trap. It’s one of the many reasons I hate them so very much.
