Anti-user

Mozilla’s new DNS resolution is dangerous. All your DNS traffic will be sent to Cloudflare.

This is truly user-harmful and purely evil. This means that one company will have all the DNS data of all Mozilla users. Sounds like a brilliant, secure plan.

At this point, Firefox is not really any better than Google Chrome. They just have better PR. Its future is an ad delivery platform. Its present is the transformation into that.

Overache

I’m glad I’m not and never have been an overachiever. Every one of them I’ve met has seemed miserable or has appeared to be compensating for some great deficit in personality or their life in general.

Don’t get me wrong – I am definitely ambitious. You don’t get to be CTO of anything by lack of ambition. I’m perfectly content, though, to rest on my laurels, to sit a round out, to not think about the next victory, to be lazy. Indolence is something I enjoy and partake in as often as I can.

You don’t need to be an overachiever to be successful. But you do need to be one if you care about other people perceiving you as a success, and I don’t care about that comparatively much at all. Overachievers are those who seem to need that constant validation that implies some huge hole somewhere.

The Clues

False history accrues as it’s dangerous to oppose real power.

According to a narrative thatโ€™s currently popular in the mainstream media and the more lowbrow end of academia, the recent surge in popularity of the American nationalist right was caused by the radicalization of nerds. Dweeby white manchildren, so the story goes, retreated into video games, the science fiction fandom, and anonymous online forums like 4chan, and formed misogynistic, resentment-fueled subcultures within them. These neckbearded neo-Nazis gradually coalesced into the โ€˜alt-right,โ€™ an internet hate machine that contributed greatly to Toupee Hitlerโ€™s otherwise inexplicable rise.

Very few people understand that what’s happening in the world right now is one of the major re-alignments that occur every 40-60 years or so, and that we’re long overdue for. It probably should’ve happened coincident with the Great Recession but we weaseled out of it. Now its time is due; it is and will be a worldwide transformation. It’s not just the US undergoing major changes as a result of the near-collapse of neoliberalism and its entire mode of operation.

Certainly none of the American left has a clue about any of this — obsessed as they are by Russia-gate and Trump — and are farcically useless, though still alas better than their competition on the right.

Ignore the last half of that article. I have little idea what it’s going on about or why. But the first half is relevant to our current situation, and accurate.
