The Prod

I am not in academia, but my productivity when I work from home is often 10x as high when I’m in the office.

No interruptions works wonders. If executives and companies actually cared about profit and productivity, they’d want nearly everyone to work from home. But they don’t; they care about power.

Negotiate

Ha, yes! Have argued with people about this before, many times.

Them: “But it negotiated at 1Gb/s.”

Me: “Sure, but that’s just what speed the ports can run at. Let’s try manually setting it to 100Mb/s and seeing if the connection works correctly.”

Them: “But it negotiated at 1Gb/s.”

Then we try it and sure enough, works fine at the slower speed. Cable can’t do 1Gb/s, but the ports can. I wish more IT people had a better model for what’s actually happening in the real world. Never mind the users, they will never know anything. But IT people should and they don’t all too often.

Perm

That we don’t have a permanent presence on Mars is inexcusable.

Notice that I didn’t say “colony.” Colonizing Mars at our current state of tech is impossible, and Mars is a bad colonization candidate. But not having a research and “failsafe” station there is a huge mistake.

4K

Just watched my first tennis match in 4K. Wow I love it.

It was Julia Goerges vs. Anna Kalinskaya. Makes it seem so much more present, physical, in 4K. Goerges served some wicked aces, by the way.

Hoarding

I think it might be time to start hoarding more things than plastic straws and utensils. If “progressive” eco-fascism comes, as I expect it will, many goods will become unavailable.

If that does hit, I’d also expect it to cause about 2-4 billion deaths, not even associated with climate change, so there’s that.

Ya’ll Toast

The “progressives” are really going all out on enumerating in loving detail all the things they are going to have to take away from everyone to fight climate change.

You know, that’s going to be a hugely, absurdly unsuccessful strategy. It’ll backfire so hard (already is) that any normal person will think — correctly — that these people have lost their damn minds.

I agree 100% that we have to re-order society to fight climate change. It’s likely an existential issue. However, taking away people’s toasters and computers is going to be about as successful as you’d expect. Forced authoritarian asceticism has gone over really well, historically. (That is sarcasm.)

I mean, wtf, toasters? How do you you toast a fucking bagel without a fucking toaster? Is that mook just taking the piss or what?

Carom

I don’t dislike caramel, exactly. It’s okay. But if given the choice between something with caramel and without, I’ll almost always choose sans caramel. Caramel to me is something you add if the food otherwise wouldn’t be good, like high fructose corn syrup.
