Most people win stupid prizes because they play stupid games.

My pronouns for today are “slippery Al Pacino” and “defunct department stores.”
Square Wheel
i wish all arguments about programming were separated by goals because nobody who's talking about web dev or distributed computing should ever ever ever be talking in the same place as anyone talking about normal computer shit that isn't intended for making a billion dollars

Especially since nearly all of that tech is absolute garbage anyway. It’s reinventing the wheel, and doing so poorly. Why bother with most of it? It’ll be different in five years. Keep learning the fundamentals and don’t let your skills slip, but don’t jump into every new shiny.
FA Non
So the latest Fat Acceptance nonsense is that weight stigma actually causes cardiac disease, hypertension and diabetes? It’d take opening a pecan orchard to get any nuttier.
But I am sure they’ll find a way.
Gene Pool High Dive
23. I count Selfish reasons to have more kids as one of them, though I think Bryan Caplan overstates the โparenting doesnโt matterโ case.
Heโs very right that genetics matters though, and I find it kinda shocking how many people deny or donโt know this.
— Divia Eden (@diviacaroline) December 15, 2019
People deny all things genetic because of how often genetic ideas have been misused. Their position is understandable but does more harm than good. The truth matters, even if it’s dangerous.
For the same reason, many/most scientists will claim with a straight face that if distributions have overlap, then they are magically the same. Why believe something so bizarre? See above. Because of the misuse of genetics and race “science” and the pushback against that misappropriation of science, that justified rebellion infected the entire discourse and led to scientists declaring distributional overlap means that two populations etc. are really identical. It’s absolutely insane but you can see how it developed and persisted.

Internet is often framed as a type of โIndustrial Revolutionโ but it actually bears more parallels to the Renaissance which was a โCultural Revolutionโ bc the shift internet made in society was about distribution of ideas, not commodity

Great, short thread. She’s right and Ian Welsh is wrong about the “internet didn’t change anything” supposition. First, it’s too soon to completely know what the internet changed, though it’s obvious a great deal has been altered cognitively and socially. Second, how likely is that we accelerate communication and information availability by thousands of times and nothing changes? When has that never changed society? All the time is how often that has never happened.
It’s like saying that radio and television had no consequences, changed nothing. It’s just prima facie absurd.

“Vegan” sneakers set to become one of the hottest sustainability trends in 2020.
I see that they are attempting to unify the taste of vegan food and shoes.
This Guy
I like this guy. I also take this sort of thing as compliment.
The thing that cracked me up about that jackass's tweet about AOC was that he called her a "know-it-all". That's a common insult from people who know nothing. I get it all the time from ignorant motherfuckers and I take it as a compliment.

Yep, there are no excuses now. Just because you don’t know how to find valid information is on you. Compared to the days I’d struggle to find what I needed or wanted to learn, right now is paradisiacal.
When I was a kid our teacher gave us the definition of a "Renaissance man" and I thought "Sounds like a life goal." So I went and did it. You just decide to learn shit and you do. Almost anybody can. If you can shitpost on the internet you can educate yourself about everything.
— Josh Ellis (@jzellis) January 3, 2019
I mean this as insultingly and patronizingly as possible, but I am constantly surprised by how little people know. Like, it’s not hard! There’s a whole world of information out there. Get you some learning. Damn. The time for excuses and ignorance is over. If you’re a dumbass now, it’s all on you.
