Bitcoin Was the Best Investment of the Decade.

No. It was potentially the most profitable. That is not nearly the same thing as “best.” When one considers investments, these are some of the factors one must assess: risk, potential returns, volatility (beta), fungibility, liquidity and usefulness, the time horizon and security.

There are others; those are not the only ones. However, Bitcoin fails on the most of these measures. If you were lucky enough to get in early it was probably profitable. But as an investment, it’s terrible in most ways that matter.

Firelive

The firewall is dead….

Ahahahaha!

You know, I’ve been hearing that since the late 1990s. And it wasn’t true then, isn’t true now, and wont be true for a long time. Not that Google isn’t doing some interesting things. But they are operating at a scale that is beyond mere mortals and very little of it applies to anyone else.

I see these “firewall is dead” articles pop up about every five years, and every time a vendor is trying to peddle some bullshit product or service.

It Takes

Just wanted to comment on this post with some additional info.

As my partner pointed out, people are talking about Kumail Nanjiani’s transformation as if it were some sort of magical feat.

But it only takes about 4-5 days in the gym a week for a year, spending about an about an hour a day, to look like that. You do have to work hard. But that’s life! You want results, you must put in the labor. You can’t just stand around and listlessly lift weights and sit on a machine and paw through your phone for an hour. And sure, the time required could be a bit more, could be a bit less, depending on your genetics and how correctly you eat, but it’s not magic. Just putting in the effort and time is what it amounts to.

And remember that the photo (and all photos like this) would be taken under these conditions:

1) When he’d just worked out (so muscles are filled with blood, only way to get apparent vascularity like that).

2) After he’s dehydrayed and fasted.

3) In great lighting.

4) Oiled and flexed (while appearing not to be flexed, very easy to do).

And there’s nothing wrong with that! When I cut and take photos, that’s how I am going to do it, too. But one should be aware of exactly what’s being done and how it can be deceiving.

Getting that fit is not some alchemistic, unattainable endeavor. But it does take effort, intent, and resolve. Anyone can do it, though, with much fewer resources than he had available.

Nevery Song Never

But the propaganda says EVERY SONG EVER is on there. Even though, as I’ve said before, I can find roughly half the music I care about on there or any streaming service available in the US.

Write On

Watchmen. Finished the last episode.

Holy fuck, that is some tight writing. Just excellent in all its aspects, even the parts that didn’t quite gel. It said so much so well. This NYT review captured it best.

Itโ€™s hard to overstate how risky, how primed for disaster, was the challenge that the creator, Damon Lindelof, signed up for. First, to adapt a notoriously hard-to-adapt subversive superhero comic. Then to lovingly, impishly subvert that subversion, extending the story backward and forwards in time. To do all that while reframing the story as an antiracist pulp thriller, weighty without being pompous or exploitative. Oh โ€” and could it also be electrifying and playful and fun?

Exactly. When it opened with the Tulsa Massacre in the first episode, I thought, “There is no possible way this could go well.”

I was so wrong. What a great show, art.

Algone

When I use a browser where I happen to see ads on YouTube, I get ads for Plan B, shampoo that appears to be attempting to appeal to Latinas, and various ones for mascara and the like.

So…YouTube seems to think I am a Latina (woman) who does not want to become pregnant, and who also needs some help with personal grooming. Those algorithms are killin’ it, ya’all!
