Biz Idea

I think this is ok, but probably most of the super-spreader events occur at non-business gathering places such as private parties, church services and the like. This would help with restaurant spread, though, which is not nothing. But I bet these days not a lot of spreading is happening in restaurants so I’m only guessing a 10% case reduction or so.

NoVGA

That’s not VGA! That’s a serial (DB9) to console (RJ45) adapter, usually used to connect to routers and switches. Quite useful! I have several and used to carry them around all the time to connect to Cisco gear and such. Not as useful anymore now that laptops don’t have serial ports. Different pinout than Ethernet, too.

Constructor

This is why we’re also supposed to pretend there’s no such thing as biological sex, that the fact that something is “just a construct” matters that much, and that all outcomes of algorithmically-mediated “choice” are equally valid.

Possa Bill

The idea that it’s impossible to lose weight is belied by all the people who do.

I know the statistics. But that some people do it, and fairly easily, shows that the “impossible” narrative is missing a lot. I myself lost more than 25% of my body weight more than a decade ago and have kept it off since.

It wasn’t even that hard. I know that I’m a bad comparison because I’m as stubborn as a rampaging hippopotamus, but other people do it too. Not so “impossible,” then.

Outside

People trying to make the virus into a moral judgement are just as delusional as the “V-shaped recovery” disphits. I am glad Zeynep is pushing back against the clueless liberal “stay inside infinitely” views. That we fucked up the pandemic response doesn’t mean we can just stay indoors forever.

That was never the plan and couldn’t work, anyway.

Failed It

We should be concentrating more on finding and punishing people like Larry Nassar — you just know that has to be happening at tons of other places — and less on the poor wittle hurt feelings of relatively well-off white women above the age of majority who thought they’d use their sexuality to get a leg up and failed at it.

Of course, that won’t happen. But I wish.

Unmasked

All that history is being erased now. The scope of the elite/expert failure was immense. The Washington Post at the start of the pandemic averred that mask-wearing was a superstition, no different than throwing salt over your shoulder.

Those people all still have jobs.

Disa

I really, really don’t understand the desire of so many women to be seen as choicelss infants. Does that really help? I guess it does in the short term when a guy you sleep with disappoints you. But that’s a bad path; one I wouldn’t want to be on.

I guess it’s easier to claim, “Oh, I was young and naive! I could not have possibly known sleeping with some dude would not really give me anything and everything I wanted! I thought I was his very favorite! I was just such a baby!” (Somehow, a 22-year-old baby.)

Perhaps I have trouble understanding because I have never in my life been that fucking clueless. I don’t know. These women regretting their liaisons with Ellis mostly just sound sorry that he didn’t want to marry them, and didn’t make them as successful as they’d deluded themselves into believing might be possible.

I say this to men and women: take responsibility for your own lives and your own actions. It feels so much better in the end.

Vaguesplaining

I don’t even know who Warren Ellis is, so trying to figure this out is probably pointless. But here’s a case where it seems women are deliberately self-infantilizing because they regret dating some nerdy dude.

From what I can tell, he didn’t target minors, he only used some so-called power differential (that to me seems, uh, pretty non-differential) to do what? Date? Like normal people used to? But that’s called “grooming” now I think. If the algorithm didn’t approve it, it shouldn’t happen, after all.

Or as a few Twitter users said:

Ellis seems a bit more aggressive than I’d ever be, but he doesn’t seem to have ever attempted to date minors, and the main regret of these women appears to be that they didn’t become as successful as they hoped — so now they regret dating the guy for a bit.

I literally cannot figure out what he did wrong except being a serial dater and a bit of a jerk sometimes.

If a woman did what he has done, by the way, she’d be considered “cool and sexually liberated.” That’s how you can always tell what it’s really about.

Grifting

This is true. If I had a better option than legally stealing money from people dumber than me in the stock market, I would do it.

I find it kind of appalling that society allows that. But between that and not having a nice life, I’ll take having a nice life. These terrible incentives are how the world is made worse, bit by bit.

GOT Pow

I’ve heard this used about dozens (at least) of men. Maybe it’s more common in the Southern US? Though it’s usually said of young men.

Another sign that the left thinks words are all-powerful. But to quote Cersei from GOT, power is power.
