Nan

I want to hire a nanny. Not because we have kids, or even for any prurient Tiger Woods reasons. None of that.

No, just because then I can say we have a nanny and when people ask, “Oh, how old are your kids?” I can say, “We don’t have any kids.” And then just say nothing after that.

Now that would be funny.

Boom Shaka

She’s right — if we actually did what was necessary to address climate change, it’d be the largest economic boom in world history, exceeding WWII and the Industrial Revolution by about double (at least).

The first rule of working in infrastructure and design is that no one believes the infrastructure person about the thing that you told them won’t work until you design and build all the infrastructure and show them that indeed it does not work.

So many people don’t believe that the speed of light matters. But it does. Latency == doom for performance.

Face No Time

Other people are thinking about the same sorts of things I’ve been noticing.

Face asks: In a world where touch and physical intimacy is considered abhorrent, is it possible for familyโ€”and by extension, societyโ€”to function, and can we ever break free of the assumptions we make about race and class, and how those tie into the way we view our own humanity?

Yes, I understand that the post is marketing, but the summary is what I care about. And I perfectly well understand that the situation in our society is not likely to get this extreme, but the liberals are certainly trending this way.

Of course, this is not new ground; in the movie Demolition Man from the 90s, people had “sex” where little touch was involved and was in fact legally prohibited. I really like that film because it understood the bankruptcy of the “liberal” woke (before “woke” was even a thing) utopia and tackled it with good humor and the proper derision.

But I definitely think we could arrive at a world where the algorithm completely dictates with whom and how we relate to one another, and where any unauthorized relationships are highly discouraged or are outright illegal.

Oppo WFH

I suspect there will be once they realize the implications, but I am kind of surprised libs aren’t more opposed to work from home already as it means we can live anywhere. It’s much harder to pack us into urban megalopolis work pods and force us to eat bugs if there is nowhere in particular we have to live.

Suspect there will be much more opposition to WFH from the lib quarter for this reason soon.

Antics

Told all you dumbass mooks that this is exactly what was going to happen. Deplatforming works really well — against the left.

I just have no patience remaining for how little foresight or systems thinking capability most people have. Some things are just bleeding obvious but all people can see is the possibility of their pissant impuissant team scoring some meaningless goal.

Who Indeed

Everyone with any intelligence knew. But that’s not that many, politician or not. A resurgence was inevitable when people started returning indoors again, especially as everyone is utterly exhausted by lockdowns — as they very well should be.

The predictable has occurred, and there will still be too many squirming from the walls to cry, “Who could have known?”

War, What Is It Good For

Watching Saving Private Ryan in a theater filled with 82nd Airborne Division paratroopers, many of whom had been in combat, and how visceral and gutting the beach landing scenes were. Fuck.

I’ve never been in a theater where the audience watched a movie so intently.

Utopino

Leonard Cohen wrote about the liberal utopia in “Everybody Knows.”

And everybody knows that the Plague is coming
Everybody knows that it’s moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there’s gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows

“A meter on your bed” indeed. Probably a camera, too. Why the liberals have this ethos, this desire for utter control of expression and emotion and lust, I have no idea. Perhaps because these are all so very messy. But welcome to the mess! It’s called the universe, and it’ll be here for a while yet.

Rationalism + neoliberalism and the infestation of this into academia and the back-propagation thereof out of that domain makes most “intellectual” people sound like GPT-3 disgorging algorithmic word salad, a half-comprehensible spew of barely-comprehended justification for a status quo that they don’t truly understand is even mutable.
