Hate me all you like, but I don’t see much difference between declaring yourself Spanish or German and declaring yourself a man or a woman.
Why do so many people so readily accept “arbitrary” in some places culturally, and not others? I’d argue that “Spanish” or “German” or any nation-based identity is far more discretionary than gender, even.
But we must pretend as others pretend, or we are condemned.

When the left was cheering so very loudly for censorship, it was always inevitable it’d be used against them the most assiduously. This was as predictable as effect of a nuclear explosion on a squirrel.

What happened was fairly simple, I’ve come to believe. It was an accident. A virus spent some time in a laboratory, and eventually it got out. SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, began its existence inside a bat, then it learned how to infect people in a claustrophobic mine shaft, and then it was made more infectious in one or more laboratories, perhaps as part of a scientist’s well-intentioned but risky effort to create a broad-spectrum vaccine. SARS-2 was not designed as a biological weapon. But it was, I think, designed.
At first, I discounted this. Now I believe it about 80%. It seems most likely to me. It’s no accident that the Wuhan Institute of Virology was right at the heart of the initial outbreak, and how vociferously both the Chinese and other researchers denied the validity of this speculation.
Unfortunately, I lack the skill to examine the virus and its genetic sequence enough to determine myself either way, and it’d take me maybe a year to obtain this capability. So, not worth it.
But I suspect this was at first a natural virus that was being used in research and then somehow escaped. Nothing else makes sense when examined in toto.
The amazing thing is that when you mention Assange, the only people who pop up to demand he be imprisoned and prosecuted are US liberals.

Try this: see how an upper middle class or striving-to-be upper middle class family reacts when their son or daughter tells the parental units that their ambition is to be an HVAC tech or a plumber rather than a lawyer or an HR specialist, etc. I’ll tell you, the reaction will not be pretty.
A friend of mine in the UK was dating what there is called a “joiner” but here would be called a carpenter. Her parents were enraged that she was dating someone “below her station.” Her friends were appalled. Same would be true in the US, just with somewhat different class connotations.

The elite and wannabe-elite left believes this because love and sex are, for them, actually about power. That’s how they see it and that’s the use to which they put those human experiences. They can’t imagine it could be for or about anything else.
That 98%+ of the world does not and never will think this way about any of it does not and never will occur to the elite and wannabe-elite left.
That’s why they got so incensed when Warren Ellis slept with a bunch of women without keeping what they saw as his end of the bargain: he did not fairly trade power and advancement for sex, so he was branded as an abuser. This, in the liberal mind, is the abuse.
I think one of the reasons for the libs’ interest in so stringently and rigidly policing other’s relationships is that they have experienced loss of power in almost every other realm that matters.
It’s a way to feel like they are achieving something, “saving” people, when in reality it’s not helpful and mostly harmful — and most harmful unfortunately to the very people they are “helping.”
Of course, some people just enjoy being busybodies and such, but that’s always true. The increase must be explained some other way.
