Something I’ve noticed lately is that “a man asking a woman out” is much, much less often being framed now as automatic harassment. People are desperate for connection and resumption of the social.
Wonder how long that good thing will last?

In a society as rich as ours, any poverty or material lack is always a policy choice.
I cannot stand the toxic atmosphere of glee around the link between coronavirus and obesity.
I haven’t seen anyone — literally anyone — express “glee” about the link between obesity and Covid mortality. What I have seen is people rejecting the idea that so-called “Healthy at Every Size” is really a thing you can be besides rare exceptions, and observing correctly that if so many people weren’t so obese, mortality would be much lower.
A lot of us who work to maintain our weight and our health are really tired of being told that we have “hatebodies” and that it’s “impossible” to be of a normal weight, and that those of us who have lost weight and kept it off are somehow hurting the obese.
That shit gets super old. No one is happy that the obese are dying in greater numbers. But many of the FA types have wanted to live in blissful ignorance of the fact that obesity is in fact harmful. Furthermore, those same people harm children and others who don’t know any better. Many people are just observing that FA propaganda has led to many deaths, and will lead to many more.
Western society has nearly completely lost the infrastructure that could support complex thinking.

It’s amazing how people will line up to say how nothing can ever be any different, give reasons for it, and then also talk about how much things have changed. It makes no goddamn sense. Scalzi is a putz, but he’s a better-informed putz than most. Still doesn’t mean he’s not a fucking idiot, though. He’s just an idiot who has read a couple of books, unlike a lot of his other co-dumbasses.
But this is the core problem:
