Know Nothings

What’s particularly annoying about Scalzi and nearly all the others who have been “debating” about copyright is not one of them discusses any tradeoffs, any benefits or drawbacks of the current system. There is no understanding of the system as is, how it developed, or the part corporations played. All they argue is:

1) Others are grabbing as much as they can, so I should be able to as well.

2) It’s impossible to change because of treaties or something. So we shouldn’t even try.

3) People who believe in the public domain or shorter copyright terms hate authors and want them and their families starving in the streets.

I know that the quality of discourse is no better elsewhere, but these are people who profess to know something about it. And they know nothing! They know nothing at all. They can’t even be bothered to think about it. I realize part of it is that their incomes depend on it, but that’s not all of it. Not even the majority, I think.

They are just completely incurious and because of American propaganda and our atrocious education system, they are literally incapable of any sort of complex thought. They simply cannot do it. They can spout off slogans and propaganda snippets; sound bites and semi-memorized spiels. But nothing else.

It’s just not possible to do anything with people like this other than defeat them. And alas, there are so, so many of them.

Unzoom

Exactly. Zoom and video calls aren’t doomed, but it’ll never be more than 20% of anything post-pandemic, even with all the newly-minted lockdown lifers and hikikomori types.

Burger Primacy

In a way we’ve returned to an earlier time, one where people worshipped words and their power above all else, and eschewed natural or systems explanations.

This is not a good thing.

Dev Beau

That is true in immature men, and it’s why incel-dom (in all its variants) isn’t really about sex.

And I can understand the power of that! When I was 17, I went to a school dance with a very beautiful friend of mine I’ve written about previously. More than one dance, but that first one is where I saw how much more respect I got even being with a beautiful girl — from both men and even more so, women. Even teachers treated me better after that! This doesn’t just end in high school, by the way. I was happy to go with her (her idea), but I had no clue that people would treat me so much better after until it actually happened. Literally I just walked into the auditorium with a beautiful girl, everyone saw, and I was treated twice as well ever after. Who wouldn’t want that, even if it’s not really fair to anyone, including the woman?

The incel fantasy is really about being with a devastatingly beautiful and charming woman that everyone knows you’re with. And the reason is because you do get treated better after that. Don’t want it to be true, whatever. It still is.

Terr Fam

Been there. Some of the relatives who treated me the best wisely divorced out of my terrible family. Never saw them again.
