Spiking It

I knew this a long time ago because I can fucking read.

Rememember my posts going on about how there were limited configuration states that SARS2 could be in? I ask again: can people just not read? Is the desire to be filled up with fear that strong? What the fucking hell is going on here? These are not hidden secrets that one has to fight a demon to obtain. You just have to look at a book.

But I guess that does make them hidden secrets to most.

Some Change

Well, at least the libs have moved on from screeching about killing Gramma to “the Delta variant is the mostest scariest thing ever since nuclear weapons and why aren’t you all crying under your beds like me OMG Delta is tunneling under the foundation.”

Ok, I am not sure that really is better. But it’s at least a change?

90% Wrong

Just look how fucking dumb and clueless people are, even the “smart” ones:

Only a few viruses mutate quickly. People have heard of HIV the most so that’s what they always cite, but it’s rare in the viral kingdom in that it does have a high mutation rate. This is why it’s very difficult to create a vaccine to combat it reliably. (And that it works differently than most other viruses matters.)

Coronaviruses do *not* mutate quickly and Covid is demonstrative of that. No matter the scaremongering you hear about those terrifying variants, the mutation rate is quite low, especially considering the amount of hosts SARS2 has in which to modify itself. This is exactly why we have effective vaccines and why people in Asia infected with bat coronaviruses decades ago still have some immunity against Covid right fucking now.

“Smart” people are often terrifyingly wrong and stupid

Pred

Prediction: there will never be a Covid variant that drops the effectiveness of the mRNA vaccines below 70%.

Prediction two: people will still be running around in a frenzy in two years attempting to get us to lock down and stay in our prison countries until it is “completely safe.”

No Minds

What’s the alternative, Charlie? Staying inside for years? How will that fucking work, exactly? Do you know how destructive that is to people’s pysches, how many people do not want to and simply cannot live that way?

It’s easy enough for some dipshit writer who already stays inside all the time to attempt to require the rest of us to do so, but it’s a completely different story for anyone who is not already a de facto lockdown lifer. These death cult pseudo-libs pretend to care about human flourishing, to want open borders, to desire the best for people, but when it comes down to it they are just as parochial and fearful as the insular conservative pea-brains they denigrate.

They just needed something friendly to their delusions to let it out publicly.

11 Down

Why Doesnโ€™t Windows 11 Support My CPU?

The real answer is because OEM licensing $$ for Windows and PC sales have been lagging lately as computers last longer, so Microsoft and the OEMs needed a way to prod their marks to upgrade. The ever-useful specter of “security” was a great way to do that. It’s the lie that usually works.

There is a backlash this time and the decision might not stand, but Mozilla got away with something similar with Firefox by very successfully conning their willing marks and then banning all discussion about the topic on official and semi-official forums. Microsoft in cahoots with PC sellers here was hoping to do the same thing.

That’s the real answer. The rest is just spreading corporate-approved propaganda.

Why are people so willing to do that so often? Thinking be hard, I guess.

Vox Stultus

Unvaccinated people are driving the pandemic now — and in the US, if you’re unvaccinated it’s by choice. So fuck you.

Unvaccinated people are getting the wrong message, experts said.

โ€œThey think itโ€™s safe to take off the mask. Itโ€™s not,โ€ said Lynn Goldman, dean of the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University. โ€œIt looks like fewer numbers, looks like itโ€™s getting better, but itโ€™s not necessarily better for those who arenโ€™t vaccinated.โ€

I do not care even a little bit about what happens to a person who chooses not to get vaccinated. I know that makes me cold-hearted. But I have little empathy, and must spare it for people who deserve it. The unvaccinated-by-choice do not deserve a single drop of it.

You made your choice. Die drowning, motherfuckers.

Sampling

True. Many if not most academic studies are of college students between the age of 18 and 25, because they are what’s readily available. Aella’s are probably more “random” along several dimensions than this, though self-selection bias is a legitimate problem of course. But that’s also true of the studies I just mentioned….

Once

This guy is a bit annoying and you can skip the first pointless minute or so, but he also understands the film, why it works and what it’s getting at. That is rare these days, so I had at least to acknowledge that.

Decent analysis. A thousand people watch a film, maybe one of them understands it. Such is life.

Acce

Here’s a really great example of the accent that was quite prevalent from the 1970s until the mid-1990s.

I could write a lot about exactly what distinguishes that very peculiar (yet extremely common at the time) accent, but listen to the very distinct consonant enunciation and the flat, very wide, almost-monotonal vowels with the syllable stresses nearly rounded off. The first and last word of a phrase is almost always emphasized as well, which is part of what makes it very distinctive.

So glad I was able to find such a clear, short example of that (so far as I know) unnamed accent that has completely disappeared now.

Intransitive

Trans issues are a great distraction for both sides: it’s a small population that hardly has any effect on anything, each side has some really very wacky ideologues who seem to dominate the debate from time to time, and nothing anyone does here will matter very much in the end but it stirs people up a whole lot.

Also, the conservatives can pretend they are defending children to get out votes, and the libs can pretend that biological facts aren’t real so they can promote neoliberalistic goals.

It’s a win for everyone. Well, almost.
