They thought the Waffle House had a drive-through. It didn’t, but they decided to go ahead and install one.
Someone said on Twitter (lost the tweet) that you aren’t a real Southerner unless you’ve been involved in a late-night/early morning Waffle House brawl. Guess I’m a real Southerner, because I have, at least peripherally.
Then, I was trying to leave my brawling ways behind so I only hit and got hit enough to get out of there and to my car. At least no one pulled a gun in that one.
norms of discourse increasingly shaped by an attitude like "if you are misleading for a cause you truly believe in, can one really characterize that as 'in bad faith'?"
That is quite true. I’ve usually seen it framed as, “We must lie to these people for their own good, because they won’t believe the truth.” This is what many (most?) so-called experts sincerely believe now. And when this strategy of mendacity backfires, as it inevitably does, they are surprised that copious lying did not achieve the goals they desired.
Yet they do it again and again and again. I cannot understand it.
"Itโs like we didnโt have vaccines. Or worse." Yesterday I had a long conversation with @erictopol about the state of the Delta wave, where the effect of vaccines is almost invisible, with deaths & hospitalizations tracking much higher than expected. (1/x) https://t.co/uNRPQrzNS4
She either can't comprehend the Delta variant or she's the mom who finds out her kids are playing in traffic, shrugs and says, "Well, that's how they learn." https://t.co/54YuBj6PS4
She sounds to me like she understands the great harm of the lockdown lifer ethos and realizes that hiding inside eternally, closed off from the world, will not result in anything good.
The blue state scoldy people like Catherine are loving this shit.
That said, we should be vaccinating kids as quickly as possible, should’ve been doing it already, and vaccination should be mandatory for adults and children to even leave the house.
I was not surprised that Settlers was poorly reviewed on IMDB.
It’s told mostly from the perspective of girls and women, it is one of the bleakest movies I’ve ever seen, and it doesn’t offer any hope at the end, really. It’s not a comfortable or comforting movie, and to be fair it’s not completely successful in the entirety of its aspirations. It had plenty of guts, but perhaps needed more meat.
Nell Tiger Free as older Remmy in Settlers.
That said, Settlers gives very little to the viewer and demands quite a lot. Those kind of movies never achieve high ratings. It’s uncompromising, and you have to understand as much about what it’s not doing as what it is doing to make sense of it. The film is about what people do when they have no choices, what delusions they then choose to allow them to continue, what decisions they make in the face of no decision actually really mattering one way or another. Perhaps they never matter even in this world, but in the world of the movie they definitely do not.
Don’t let the sf setting fool you: this is an art house type film and must be read as such (another reason for all the bad reviews). The entire cast was really quite good, but Nell Tiger Free as the older Remmy was just perfect. The other characters were mirrors for ourselves, showing what we’d be in such a situation. Nell Tiger Free as older Remmy, though, was a brighter mirror, reflecting what we could be if were just a little bit better than we are.
Speaking of Lollapalooza, although I thought the lineup wasnโt very good, there were all sorts of tweets out there about how this was a COVID festival. My friends, they had a strict vaccine/rapid test requirement. Yes, there were 100,000 people there or whatever (which does not sound fun to me), but letโs stop pretending like the vaccine doesnโt work or that we canโt have music festivals if you enforce vaccine/testing requirements. Not helpful!
I saw so many dipshit libs whining about Lollapalooza. Those lockdown lifers are never going to let us go back to our lives, no matter what happens. How did we get here? I remember different liberals once, who actually wanted people out in the world, engaging, doing normal human things.
But modern liberals have been captured by the algorithm, deeply want human freedom diminished “for our own good,” and desperately want to ready us all of the pod life that they see as inevitable.
We can also see that if Delta is really this bad, weโll need masks & other precautions for a long time to come.
Thatโs a real bummer & whatโs worse, we could have avoided this by doing a better job controlling infections last year.
Letโs not make the same mistakes twice!

This thread is largely garbage and “proves” things with very dubious but plausible-sounding math, as is the way of these types. I told you Delta would be the cattle prod they’d use to attempt to goad us all back indoors — obvously just about forever.
These people love prison countries, the idea of us hiding inside until the sun goes red giant, and are deeply devoted to the asceticism and us suffering “for our own good.”
Covid eliminationism should not be the goal. That’s absurd and will never work. This is all farce, perpetrated by people who want to harm us. Now’s the time to resist while pushing for better ideas.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Iceland (93% of the population 16 years of age or older vaccinated) is experiencing its largest wave of Covid-19 yet. At this point, I think it is unreasonable to assume that increased vaccine coverage will result in herd immunity pic.twitter.com/k8mUZAtIGO
Looks like the vaccines are working to me. All this shows is that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine isn’t very good at preventing infection compared to the others.
Still, good to know. Also, he’s probably wrong about herd immunity, depending on the vaccine used. AZ and J&J: probably not. Pfizer and Moderna: probably so. These difference matter.
But they want you to panic now, want you all herded back inside. Bezos needs a few more billion for important space projects.
I mostly agree with DeSantis here — the decisions more than the reasoning behind them. The vaccines are available and effective. We cannot and should not spend years cowering inside. The time to fully re-open and resume normal life is now. There is absolutely no possibility (and never was) of Zero Covid.
I guess they also have not heard we have vaccines. What was the point of vaccination if we’re just going to pretend like they don’t exist and don’t work? Fuck this nonsense.
It’s too hard to type Cyrillic on my keyboard so I use this. No, I do not know Russian or any other language that uses Cyrillic variants, but I do listen to a lot of Russian bands and others that use Cyrillic and I need to search for those sometimes.
I can recognize a couple hundred Russian words now, though, thanks to my interest in Russian pop music and such. A lot of times it can only be found in Russian, so that’s what I gotta type.
Thinking of when I was 19 and my girlfriend was 18. We’d gone over to a visit a couple that we were friends with at their small apartment. The place had only one bathroom and you had to walk through the master bedroom to get to it. After a few hours there my girlfriend had to go, so she did her business and returned.
In a moment that the couple was in the kitchen she said, “They have a big mirror on the ceiling above the bed. I wonder who wants to look at themselves while they’re sleeping.”
“I don’t think it’s for when they are sleeping,” I replied.
“Oh. Ohhhhhh,” was her response. Then: “I want that!”
She was very sexual (wanted it more often than I did, by far) but was not that experienced. We broke up before any mirrors made an appearance above our bed. But I bet she eventually got her mirror as she mentioned that to me about half a dozen times while we were still together.
