Propaganda, Lies and Fear

I’ve read articles that stop just short of saying, “Every kid in Michigan is currently dead of Covid” and then you actually look at the numbers and it’s really that all of the ICU beds are full of kids with RSV, and the two kids sick enough with Covid got turned away and got better all on their own because they weren’t that ill.

But whipping up hysteria makes money, and that’s all that matters.

Book Face

I sold all my Facebook holdings about a month ago. Saw trouble brewing, and I was right. Made a very tidy profit and now have a lot of free money in my active trading account.

Not seeing many bargains out there, so it’ll sit I guess. I don’t speculate in the sense most people mean; I wait until I know I can make a profit, and then I do. When I see another opportunity like that, the money will go there.

Slack Dys

Slack sucks so, so fucking much.

Go away for one day and people leave you a random spam of messages in two dozen different channels where it’s impossible to find anything, or to sort it, or to keep track of it for later.

People who think this spew is more productive or better are deluding themselves, I think. Like a lot of modern things, Slack gives you the illusion of more productivity because it produces a lot of noise and activity resulting in very little at all. It’s a sham, a farce, and for most people a social playground.

And no matter how diligently I check Slack, I invariably miss 1-2 really important messages a week.

It’s just a terrible fucking abomination of a tool.

Segments

I am not sure why I was reading this article, because I don’t really care about Gary Shteyngart at all. These two lines, though, struck me.

Examining its pockets, he found a pipe, a small bag of a recently legalized substance, a business card for an art manager and a typed invitation to a party, which was dated 2002 and addressed to Professor Shteyngart. He couldnโ€™t recall if he went but noted wistfully that one could attend a party with students back then.

The liberal desire to resegregate the world “for your own good” really is anti-human and evil; evil to its core. It’s an authoritarian’s dream, and a phantasm that insists that the edges of the world can be rounded off until we achieve something that is “completely safe.” Don’t read me wrong: the right’s Nazi and Nazi sympathizers are worse, but this liberal authoritarianism is also a dangerous scourge that needs to be resisted everywhere it is found.

Also, I’d expect the authoritarian left and the less overtly Nazi-ish alt-right to merge over the coming few decades.

Pan

I agree with this.

One of the things I liked about Villeneuve’s Dune is how Lady Jessica (who is a very well-drawn and strong character) has a barely-controlled panic attack outside the room where she thinks her son might die. That felt very real and improved on the 1984 gom jabbar scene by quite a lot.
