Propaganda, Lies and Fear

I’ve read articles that stop just short of saying, “Every kid in Michigan is currently dead of Covid” and then you actually look at the numbers and it’s really that all of the ICU beds are full of kids with RSV, and the two kids sick enough with Covid got turned away and got better all on their own because they weren’t that ill.

But whipping up hysteria makes money, and that’s all that matters.

Book Face

I sold all my Facebook holdings about a month ago. Saw trouble brewing, and I was right. Made a very tidy profit and now have a lot of free money in my active trading account.

Not seeing many bargains out there, so it’ll sit I guess. I don’t speculate in the sense most people mean; I wait until I know I can make a profit, and then I do. When I see another opportunity like that, the money will go there.

Slack Dys

Slack sucks so, so fucking much.

Go away for one day and people leave you a random spam of messages in two dozen different channels where it’s impossible to find anything, or to sort it, or to keep track of it for later.

People who think this spew is more productive or better are deluding themselves, I think. Like a lot of modern things, Slack gives you the illusion of more productivity because it produces a lot of noise and activity resulting in very little at all. It’s a sham, a farce, and for most people a social playground.

And no matter how diligently I check Slack, I invariably miss 1-2 really important messages a week.

It’s just a terrible fucking abomination of a tool.

Segments

I am not sure why I was reading this article, because I don’t really care about Gary Shteyngart at all. These two lines, though, struck me.

Examining its pockets, he found a pipe, a small bag of a recently legalized substance, a business card for an art manager and a typed invitation to a party, which was dated 2002 and addressed to Professor Shteyngart. He couldnโ€™t recall if he went but noted wistfully that one could attend a party with students back then.

The liberal desire to resegregate the world “for your own good” really is anti-human and evil; evil to its core. It’s an authoritarian’s dream, and a phantasm that insists that the edges of the world can be rounded off until we achieve something that is “completely safe.” Don’t read me wrong: the right’s Nazi and Nazi sympathizers are worse, but this liberal authoritarianism is also a dangerous scourge that needs to be resisted everywhere it is found.

Also, I’d expect the authoritarian left and the less overtly Nazi-ish alt-right to merge over the coming few decades.

Pan

I agree with this.

One of the things I liked about Villeneuve’s Dune is how Lady Jessica (who is a very well-drawn and strong character) has a barely-controlled panic attack outside the room where she thinks her son might die. That felt very real and improved on the 1984 gom jabbar scene by quite a lot.

Jobs Games

People who disbelieve cancel culture is a thing do so mainly because they hope they can use it in the future to knock people out of jobs they themselves covet.

Like many movements that originate in the US, it’s all about the perception of a zero sum game and has everything to do with scarce jobs and nothing to do with moral panics or any moral feelings at all.

Here is a good example. This is all about competition for scarce academic jobs — whatever poor thinker wrote this uses an absolutely torturous abuse of reason to argue that firing someone for their views is not an abridgment of academic freedom. It’s absurd, and the amount of words spilled on it alone is enough to demonstrate its falsehood.

Anyway, yes, cancel culture is real, no, liberals cannot believe it’s real because most of them want the jobs they are so busily cancelling people out of.

It won’t work as they expect, but what ever does?

Outex

Someone in the top 1% intelligence-wise (which Aella definitely is) can out-expert most experts in most fields fairly easily by doing diligent research and studying the latest findings in that field.

Why is this? For someone like Aella, there is no political capture, while experts often get stuck in their ways and have knowledge that is 10-50+ years outdated. This comes with huge caveats, though! You probably cannot do this reliably unless you are in that top 1%, and there are some fields where this is not possible without years of study.

But for anything medical? Yeah, not hard. Anti-vaxxers, though, show what happens when the bottom 99% attempt to out-expert experts, and it’s not pretty.

It Is To

This is a perfect example of the only things liberals seem to be able to do is to offer the most cynical, pessimistic possible take on anything. Only then are you seen as being serious.

That is completely risible. It’s just bullshit near-GPT-3 doggerel that under-the-bed-and-wailing libs will take as being obviously true.

Any excuse to take everything away will do for these mooks. They obviously really do get a sexual thrill out of it, sadly enough.

Wet It

I need to teach a class to people on how to really fuck up cars without much noise. (No, not sugar in the gas tank. That doesn’t do much. Water does, though!) There are just very many cool things you can do that break cars in a really expensive way.
