Not “fake,” I’d say, but highly, highly context-dependent. Reproduction numbers have a lot of slop, to put it non-technically. Depending on culture/environment/season, even measles can vary between an R0 of less than 2 and an R0 of 18.
Every number has politics behind it — and the more it has to do with humans (is not some physical constant), the more that is the case.

Probably? People have very short memories, even for times they themselves lived through. I think the average person’s memory of events and zeitgeist to any great degree is 1-2 years.

I wish this were not true. I so wish that.
I was in the school cafeteria, standing in the fifth grade lunch line. Some kid told me the space shuttle had exploded. I told him I didn’t believe him, because the bullying and antagonization to get a rise out of me had already started by then. But he was right, as I soon found out. I don’t know how he knew — he was in the same line I was and there were no cell phones or anything like that then. I can only assume a teacher told him the news or that he’d overheard staff in the cafeteria discussing it.
I don’t remember many other details, but the worst was confirmed when I got back to the classroom and our teacher, in tears, told us that the Challenger had been lost.

Anyway, it’s always sad to see someone formerly competent lose their damn mind.
