Color and Motion

The movie The Shallows itself is not that good, but the cinematography of the surfing scenes is really lovely.

Even the scene where Nancy gets knocked off her board and attacked by the shark is beautiful in its own grim way.

I do recommend the movie because the photography is great and Blake Lively gives a very good performance.

Austerity

Why is it “BELIEVE SCIENCE!!!!!” to assert that one should be as strict and as zealous as possible about fighting Covid, no matter what sense it makes, but it is not “BELIEVE SCIENCE!!!!!” to acknowledge that people need human interaction and connection to prosper and flourish?

Sure seems like something other than science might be going on there.

Just Drop On By

Yep. It was totally not unusual for friends to drop by unannounced and spontaneously in the 1980s and even into the 1990s. Happened all the time and was very welcomed by most. And it wasn’t just young people — everyone did this and it was nearly ubiquitous. “Hey, let’s go see what [insert name here] is up to” was a very common phrase and occurrence back then.

It only started becoming considered creepy in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Much was worse then, but much was also better. It’s a world that most people — even many who lived through it — cannot imagine now. And it wasn’t even that long ago.

Better

Why do dating apps bring out the worst in men?

The worst in men? LOL. Like women are any better. Often worse, but in (sometimes) different ways. Nancy is just pissed that some of the vast power imbalance in dating where women hold the high ground got leveled out a little, at least for the top 10-20% of men.

Of course she has a book to sell, so she must exaggerate and distort as much as possible too. Anyone writing a book must make the problem sound 100x worse than it is. And I do think a lot of women like Nancy would love to go back to patriarchy. “Unfettered access to women?” What the fuck does that mean? Maybe these women should be escorted by a male relative everywhere?

This is a real good example that when a power imbalance is equalized, the group that no longer has nearly all the power (in the case of dating, women) feels like they are being oppressed. It’s funny if you aren’t in the dating world because she’s so put upon yet so, so wrong.

There’s a Reason

Obese people have about a 50% lower one-year survival rate after organ transplant, and very obese people (when it’s even allowed), have about a 70% lower survival rate.

And that’s not because of discrimination. It’s because being obese makes you very fragile.

Wraparounds

It’s very odd to me that those who believe you should only produce and consume media about those exactly like yourself don’t realize how profoundly, deeply conservative that sentiment is. And terrible, too, of course.

How can they not see that? I guess every ideology when taken to the extremes wraps around to the other side. That’s just another example.

Joy Util

A lot of the libs do in fact have a goal: take things away from people, especially if they are items or experiences that provide joy or promote any sort of human flourishing.

But I agree. We never decided what we were attempting to achieve with pandemic mitigations so, shockingly, we never determined when we were done (and never did much that made sense).

Weather Or It’s Weather

This cracksmoker is annoying. Much more likely to do with weather, especially after the initial surge — people are spending more time inside because the weather got crappier and cases went up again, because Covid mostly spreads within households, indoors:
