Croque

Eh, not really at all. Very naรฏve literal translation. Thatโ€™s how a non-French speaker might translate it. But thatโ€™s not how it feels in French. Anyway, it better translates as โ€œcrunchy manโ€ or โ€œcrunchy gentleman.โ€ But thatโ€™s still only half accurate because it really translates as a complete nominative designation for the sandwich it in fact is.

Anyway, in reality, without a hyphen โ€œcroque monsieurโ€ is slang for โ€œhot guyโ€ in (most) French places and the sandwich would be (le) โ€œcroque-monsieur.โ€ So thereโ€™s that.
