B No

When I say the Russians have some damn good SAMs, this is what I mean. That’s why you can’t just fly B-52s over and drop some 2000 pounders. They’ll be in the dirt pronto.

Everything โ€™Spensive

Yeah, it’s no freakin’ mystery.

CoPan

That’s what I expected, and something similar will eventually be found to be true for those fully vaccinated too, I’d guess.

The Covid panickers were and are just that….

Not Cat

Same was true here. Liberals predicted that every kid would die like 12 times, and pretty much nothing happened.

It’s Out

But that is the definition of amateurish in military matters. I don’t often disagree with Zeynep, but here she’s showing when something is far outside of your experience and study, you make just terribly obvious errors of judgment and reasoning.

If an army goes in without enough spare parts, supplies and fuel on what they think will be an “easy” campaign: amateurish.

If an army is forced to rely on civilian walkie-talkies and other unencrypted, readily-intercepted comms: amateurish.

If an army has a 60km long convoy stuck on a road that it cannot leave, and has only survived by luck: amateurish.

If a military force has no integrated command and control and doesn’t even know what entire divisions are doing or where they are: amateurish.

If a military entity commits its entire force, as the Russians have, with no backups and no reserves: very amateurish.

I know this isn’t her natural realm so I’ll excuse her here, but come on. This is basic military stuff, not some mysterious new aspect of warfare. The Russian army has proved to be amateurish. That’s all.

Changelessness

I’ve discussed this with several people recently. I thought Covid would alter more than it did. Instead we came out the other side worse off, stupider, but with all the same problems and a few more to boot. Unless there is a nuclear war, I’m guessing the same thing will happen as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and our responses to it.

Why such lack of change, even with momentous events? We’re in a strange time where the old will just not perish or even slightly transform, no matter how much it really should.

What I Also Expected To See

Do Covid Precautions Work? Yes, but they havenโ€™t made a big difference.

The reason is that the lockdown (or whatever) has to be so extreme and so harsh that it kills civil society unless you’re a small island nation.

I mean, what did you really expect from a highly-contagious virus spread through the damn air? Zero Covid was always a buncha fantasyland BS. Looks cool on paper. Doesn’t work in reality except in very limited circumstances that would never and could never occur in the US.

Most Nothing

Exactly. Masks mostly do nothing in most schools almost all the time, but make blue state scoldy people feel better.

Laughingstock

I have no idea if this is true (looks reasonably plausible) but the Russian Navy should be embarrassed to be called a Navy if this really happened.

To non-military folks, this is like a kid crashing your car by throwing bubblegum at it. It’s just not something that should happen. I mean, good for the Ukrainians but goddamn.
