Steak Sizzle

Dang. Have to restore all of AD and the whole Exchange DB. Assuming you have a good backup. And if you don’t, have to recreate everything while all of management fumes.

I’ve never made that exact mistake, but a new helpdesk employee that I was team lead of did during the same era, except it was a senior executive’s entire account she nuked. She was terrified and she thought she was going to be fired. I laughed and said, “Evelyn, today you are going to learn more than you’ve learned in your whole IT career so far.” (She was very new.) I took the wrath for my minion because that’s what good managers do and the exec was mollified after much whining.

So we spent that entire day prepping, and most of the night doing the requisite restores. All was well by morning and she learned in one night what takes most junior people 2-3 years to pick up.

She turned out to be the best help desk person who worked there by far.

Pay

Good thread. Ignore Ian Welsh, pay attention to people who know what the fuck they are talking about.

Right Up

In the history of stupid mistakes, that does rank right up there.

Cometary

It was a night jump in 1997. No gear, just an M-16A2. I stepped out of the C-130 and the air was dead calm. Looked over to my right side as I was falling and I saw the comet Hale-Bopp just brilliant and refulgent in the sky. It was icily beautiful and seemed like I could reach up and touch it; we were far enough away from civlization that there was little light pollution. I watched the comet all the way to the ground and had a nice, soft landing in some sand where I stayed for longer than normal to take it in a bit more.

As we all made it to the rally point the spirit was hushed, much quieter than paratroopers usually are when together. Everyone had been awed by the sight of Hale-Bopp ablaze above us and I think we all felt smaller than usual. The typical paratrooper bravado had been tamped down a little and the conversations were deeper as we waited to head back to base proper.

That was a good fucking night. I miss that life sometimes.
