people don’t really have a good intuition of what “war crimes” are beyond “bad things that happen during wars”. Stuff like shooting retreating soldiers, bombing bridges, etc. seems “worse” than painting a Red Cross on your ammo truck, but only the latter is actually a war crime!

Yeah, I’ve seen the moronic take that “attempting to fight Russia is a war crime” quite a few places in the past few days.

And Faine is right: shooting retreating soldiers is not a war crime, but the moment they surrender it is. IMO if you’re in a war you should shoot retreating soldiers. The soldier who retreats today will be killing you tomorrow. War is a dirty business.
