Isolated

Was watching the beginning of Contact again.

In the first part of the film, Palmer Joss talks to Ellie without prompting in public and without knowing her, is flirty, and asks her to dinner within a few minutes of meeting her. Back in 1997 that sort of thing was normal. In these benighted times that’d be abuse and harassment and people would be talking some crazy shit about how “I almost got sex trafficked in the cafรฉ.”

Our tech is better now but our idea of sociality fucking sucks.

Generalize

I also truly do not think Americans realize how bad they have it compared to countries they think they are far superior to. For example, they certainly have no idea just how atrocious food is in the US. Whenever I leave the country and return it’s hard for me to eat anything for a while as the food is so appalling here.

Generalize that to just about everything and you’d be right. I’ve had many Americans tell me that practices and standards are “impossible” that are routine in other countries. They don’t mean “politically impossible,” either. They mean flat-out impossible, no different than if they were attempting to high-jump to the moon or to run 50,000 mph.

It is inexplicable.

Sortition

You know, I have no idea why my music player put so many First to Eleven songs in my first 10 songs. I did what I do most of the time: pulled up my main playlist and hit “Shuffle playlist” and those bopped to the top.

The mysteries of algos. Who knows.

Cases and Uses

It’s weird getting hot in your 40s.

I like it, but it’s also disappointing as to human nature — and revealing. I use the advantages this has given me while wishing the status quo is not as it in fact is.

I do like it when women get flustered when talking with me in person, though. That has never happened to me before in my entire life but it does sometimes now.

Face It

The LGBTQ+ movement really shot itself in the face by insisting that biology isn’t real. That’s a large reason for the backlash of late; it never would’ve been nearly as intense without that absolute flapdoodle becoming ideologically sacrosanct.

There would’ve always been a backlash, to be clear — but the “biology isn’t real” claims magnified it a hundredfold. Strange how that happens when you expect people to buy contentions that are clearly untrue. Most people of good conscience will not abase themselves like that. I certainly will not.

Every

I Canโ€™t Imagine Using Windows Without the Everything App.

Great program. It also can spool up a web server and you can point the search indexer at your entire network and use a web page from any computer/OS or device to search all your files. That what we do. Works great.

Everything shows how truly broken Windows search is by how much better it functions than the inbuilt tooling. People tell me that Windows (and other OS) search can’t work correctly “because it’s just sooooooo HARD.” Everything proves, though, that search being nonfunctional is a choice, not a fact of the universe. “Everything” is developed by one dude and it works 1000x better than what comes out of the box with Windows and other OSes.
