Printrenches

Fuckin’ hell, you can tell this person has been in the trenches of IT.

I’ve seen that play out numerous times. Americans are so lazy that they’ll refuse to walk 15 feet to get their documents on a real printer that works and instead demand a crappy office printer that nearly requires a full-time helpdesk person (especially the way users often abuse them).

Part of the problem is that in traditional offices, having an in-office printer is a status symbol so users demand them because it makes them ImportantTM. I really appreciated an old boss who unilaterally banned all in-office printers for all users and made them print to actual enterprise-quality printers. There was nearly a rebellion but he won that battle.

Immediately, helpdesk tickets decreased by 60% and ticket resolution times went down enormously.

Antisocial

Where I turn little-l libertarian is when people tell me they want to harm me “for my own good.” That’s when I have the urge to retreat to the forest with a buncha long guns and shoot any trespassers.

At least be honest about the harms. That’d go a long way. But they mostly won’t even do that.
