I can confirm this happens pretty frequently on Windows. Microsoft does not give a single crap about the user experience in Windows any longer, and it really shows. It’s now buggier than those weirdo tiling window managers maintained by one dude in Slovenia you can install on Linux.

I think one of the reasons I have no problem telling phone scammers pretending to be from the government to fuck off is that I’ve told actual police and government representatives to fuck off in real life.

I think one of the problems with Twitter et al. is that it revealed that most people are incredibly boring, and don’t actually think much. Worse, pervasive social media presences showed that this was true even for the “smart” ones. It demonstrated that most people are as good at systems thinking as the average cow is at winning the high jump event at the Summer Olympics.

We now know too much about everyone and as a result of that knowledge it became glaringly obvious that most people are very dull — in many different senses of that term.

The more I think about it, the more I see ways that the antivaxxers and the perma-doom crowd are acting the same these days. To whit:

Agreed. They have the same mindset and many of the same views. Covidians have done more to cause harm from Covid than any other group except the anti-vaxxers. They think they are helping, but they are “helping” like a three-year-old “helps” make breakfast (cause a huge mess, maybe sets something on fire).

There’s too much for five words or less and some of this is discussed a bit in the comments, but I’d say: Being a guy means being aware that the universe is vastly indifferent to you, and that people only notice or care about you if your partner is really hot or you make a lot of money (preferably both).

Finally- weight is not a moral issue. A thin body is not morally superior it to a fat or larger body.

We need to recognize the social determinants of health & the society wide issues that cause chronic health problems, rather than treat & blame individuals.

I 100% disagree. Weight is a moral issue. Being fat doesn’t make you a bad person, and no one should be shamed. But it is an issue of dignity both as a society and as an individual. If you live in a society, I think you owe it at least the attempt of not being a functional and aesthetic blight. We are more and should be more than just a bag of abused and bloated flesh.

We could be glorious. And some of us try.

The number of problems that are solved by the mere presence of an IT employee (e.g. myself) is fascinatingly high and amazes me every time.

This happens because when an IT person is there the user actually reads and pays attention to the error message, often types more slowly (thus correctly), and generally just tries to do the task methodically.

At least 60% of “computer” problems are really user issues, so when the user actually starts to pay attention, mysteriously the problem solves itself.
