What we need is energy โ€” much, much more of it.

The degrowther nonsense has really screwed us up. We should be going so hard on fusion and other research that 60% of our NSF budget should be pointed that direction. “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” is mostly clownish, I am now realizing (“recycle” is good for some things).

That said, the author’s (Hall’s) politics are loopy and wrong. But he is right about energy use and what we should be attempting.

Printrenches

Fuckin’ hell, you can tell this person has been in the trenches of IT.

I’ve seen that play out numerous times. Americans are so lazy that they’ll refuse to walk 15 feet to get their documents on a real printer that works and instead demand a crappy office printer that nearly requires a full-time helpdesk person (especially the way users often abuse them).

Part of the problem is that in traditional offices, having an in-office printer is a status symbol so users demand them because it makes them ImportantTM. I really appreciated an old boss who unilaterally banned all in-office printers for all users and made them print to actual enterprise-quality printers. There was nearly a rebellion but he won that battle.

Immediately, helpdesk tickets decreased by 60% and ticket resolution times went down enormously.

Antisocial

Where I turn little-l libertarian is when people tell me they want to harm me “for my own good.” That’s when I have the urge to retreat to the forest with a buncha long guns and shoot any trespassers.

At least be honest about the harms. That’d go a long way. But they mostly won’t even do that.

Modeling Contract

I disagree. There is indeed harm in believing it. It’s nearly always bad to believe something wrong. It leaves you with an incorrect model of the world thus causing poor decisions and influencing others to the same.

Also, it led to the Covidian narrative that we sinned and now pay a larger price to expiate that sin. It’s best to model the world as accurately as possible given human limitations.

Just Changed

If liking women’s butts is a black thing, then fucking cancel me because my race just changed permanently.

(That’s the stupidest fucking thing I’ve ever heard.)

Cultish

Most “authentic” cuisine that is supposedly being “culturally appropriated” is very new, some being as recent as the 1980s.

“Cultural appropriation” talk is just about assertion of power by one group over another — usually by privileged white people attempting to retain control over cultural discourse and to exclude other groups, including the groups that should have the most say in this alleged “appropriation.”

Lith Myth

Lithium isn’t actually rare and we aren’t gonna run out. That was always a myth, like most of what most people believe most of the time.

Do It Badly

The below is about USB. And USB can do everything but it does all of it poorly, and with unpredictable (and often high) latency.

When you have to get actual work done correctly and accurately, USB is not what you’d pick. It’s fine for most applications that are not time- and latency-sensitive, though. It’s a compromise protocol, however, and that means it does nothing particularly well.

Male Relatives

If it is true as many PMC lib feminist types posit that women are nothing but tiny powerless and agency-less little babies until they are in their 40s, then none should hold any position of power; women shouldn’t serve in state legislatures or in Congress, shouldn’t be managers, should not even be in the workforce at all. They should be cloistered at home, insulated from the world, not allowed any freedom until their 40th birthday strikes.

Of course, I do not believe that women under 40 possess no agency. I believe quite the opposite of this! But to be consistent with the “women in their 20s and 30s are but helpless naifs, with no decision-making capability” narrative that many liberal feminists promulgate, isolating them from the world is the only self-consistent action.

Hope they have enough male relatives to escort them everywhere.
