Right Way

I used Facebook for exactly what I needed to: making many thousands of dollars in the stock market and then getting out before it inevitably crashed.

Anything else was a cognitohazard and time-wasting. I did it the right way. Facebook should not exist — but at least I got something real out of it: enough cash money to buy a nice damn car or for a good down payment on a house.

Out Work

I agree this is part of it, but to be fair to those people they are rightly worried about corporations holding even more creative and cultural power. Their incessant accusations that AI is “stealing” make little sense, because they don’t know how the new gen of AI works at all, but they are right to be scared that it’ll throw them out of work. It probably will.

Their reasoning about how AI actually functions and the causes of this looming dislocation are all wrong and senseless, but they are correct about the end result. It’s sort of like how nearly none of the leftists who hate the stock market understand in the least how securities or securities exchanges work, but are correct that the stock market is deeply unfair and harmful to many people.

It is funny that they accuse AI of “stealing” when they are doing the same thing in their own minds when they syncretize many past works to create their “original” ones. It’s a fundamental cluelessness that is distasteful in the extreme.

History and the Future

The censoring of the Roald Dahl books is just a precursor of what’s to come. With digital you can erase something altogether and deny it ever existed, then prosecute those who have kept any “non-existent” copies.

Demaskara

How long is this mask obsession going to last among a few Twitter people and why? They don’t even work particularly well against Omicron.

In the airports, I saw roughly 0.002% mask compliance. It’s over and done.

Half Right is Not Right

Incels are completely right in how they — and many other people — get screwed over in the dating world. They diagnose their own problems fairly accurately.

They are completely wrong in hating women or what would help them or what would be ethically and morally correct. Constant disappointment and bitterness leads to that sort of thing, though, so it’s not surprising.

Impress Less

People misunderstand me a lot because they think I’m trying to impress them. But I’d be doing the exact same shit I am now if everyone on earth died.

The only one I’m trying to impress is me. (And when people figure this out, if often pisses them off. Not sure why. Maybe people don’t like it when they realize you’re just not playing the same game they are, and don’t care about theirs in the least.)

The Change

Me in my 30s: As an infrastructure designer, I build resilient, multiply-redundant system that helps the business achieve their IT goals by use of dependable, comprehensible, and reproducible frameworks that can be understood and managed by minimally-skilled teams.

Me in my 40s: I fuck around with computers till they work right.

Pear

If the average person even had basic computer literacy, 30-40% of IT jobs would just disappear overnight. Think about that for a second. A bit staggering to ponder how much money could be saved if Linda from accounting (who has used a computer for 20 years) could find her Start menu regularly.
