By the by, most war games and simulations show that the first use of nuclear weapons is defensive and on one’s own territory. This is well-known in military circles and nearly completely unknown outside those.

That it is. Again, it goes back to the fact that most people — even most “intellectuals” — cannot at all imagine that other people have and have had really, really different minds and ways of understanding the world.

A lot of discussion you read about Covid goes like this:

Covid paranoid: Covid does this amazing shocking thing that no other virus has done EVAR!!!!!!

Anyone with a clue: *squints a little* Hmm, looks fairly similar to other coronaviruses, and the post-viral sequelae match up quite will with other PAIS-like effects from other viruses of comparable severity, including the common flu.

Covid paranoid:: But Covid is more dangerous than nuclear weapons and John Wick combined to this day and breaks your immune system FOREVER!!!!!!111111

Anyone with a clue:: Vaccination and some level of herd immunity has proven very effective. It is true now that Covid will always be with us, though, and getting it repeatedly is not good. All correct. But it’s now on the order of the flu (finally), not some apocalyptic end-of-the-world virus (as much as many Covid paranoid types wish it were). Like all other infectious viruses, it does exhibit some temporary immunosuppressive tendencies but mostly that’s just how the human immune system works in general.

I’m no immunologist or virologist. But I can read. And that’s often all it takes to just not believe wildly inaccurate shit.

FCC chair to investigate exactly how much everyone hates data caps. ISPs clearly have technical ability to offer unlimited data, chair’s office says.

Note that I am an expert in this field, probably one of the top few thousand people in the world in networking: There is no technical reason at all to have data caps, only financial ones.

I know expertise doesn’t matter anymore, but there you go.

As a sort-of aside, data caps tend to actually increase network usage. Why? People who have a cap often feel they “have to get their money’s worth” and use the service right up to its limits. Just a human behavior thing. So that’s why most often data caps lead to more network usage, not less….

Not Hate

This is true. I criticize women’s behavior sometimes on here but the reality is that I love women. Love being around them (even platonically) and hanging out with them. Most of my friends are women and that’s only gotten to be more the case as I’ve gotten older.

Musically, I listen to nearly all women artists and these days I read mostly women writers. And no, I do not do this as some suppose to get into women’s pants or whatever. I’d do this even if there was 100% no chance of that ever. (Meanwhile, others assume I do this because I’m secretly gay. The contrast is funny.) And no, I am not a “nice guy” in any sense. I am kind of a grumpy curmudgeon.

I just have more in common with women and am not good at and really fucking hate masculine posturing. Thus, most male spaces feel foreign and unwelcome to me. So my preference just makes sense.
