Yesterday, I met someone who had never heard of polka music. It wasn’t even vaguely familiar to them. They were a native English speaker and definitely over 35.
I have no explanation for this.

It’s petty I know, but I love that being fit actually makes many people angry.
But it’s not about your inadequacy until you made it that way.
Older Men of Reddit. What is 100% pure bullshit?
That in the Western world, men have it easier than women. The reality is that, some men (the very top 0.1% of men or so) have it easier than most women — even those in the top 0.1% of women. But in general we men are just scrabbling down in the weeds the same as all of you ladies.
That’s not to discount the actual challenges that women face that men do not. Those are real, and are certainly not the same as men’s. As someone with nearly all women friends, I do know this to be absolutely true.
All told, though, the equation of my life would’ve worked better had I been a woman, especially if I were in the top half of attractiveness. On net, my life would have been far easier. For instance, I would not have had my ass beaten nearly every day for years by vicious bullies. Persistent, often cruel, rejection would have been barely known to me. My existence as a girl would’ve been met with kindness and praise, mostly, rather than disgust and belligerence (which is what most adolescent males receive). You get the picture.
I am not trans and am comfortable being male now. That does not change the fact that overall, my life would’ve been far easier as a woman due to the circumstances of where I happened to be born and my own nature. And this would be true for most men in most Western places.
Social media lies can unleash a dangerous contempt for others.
But I was told social media had no effect on anything. Now I wonder who could be pushing that narrative? It shall ever remain a mystery, I guess.
This haircut is bad enough that little kids look at me weird. Needless to say, I am never going back to that person.
Luckily I have no sense of embarrassment so I don’t care all that much about this crime against hairmanity.
All the people declaiming the wrongness of what Jonathan Haidt writes about the dangers of smartphones and social media don’t really understand the point he’s making and are being very disingenuous. And, as always, many of them are paid shills citing poor evidence, or tangential evidence.
They are calling it a “moral panic” akin to the Satanic Panic during the 1980s and such. I like Danah Boyd, but she’s wrong. The evidence is pretty clear that when smartphones and social media arrive on the scene, mental health takes a huge nosedive. Only if you cherry-pick and (as scientists love to do) control away anything relevant does this obvious fact disappear.
No, it’s not only social media and smartphones. But that is a substantial contributor. Answer me this, do all of you really think that we can in less than one generation completely alter how and where people relate, the information (and misinformation) they are exposed to, the frequency with which they are hit with it, and the means of its consumption, and this has no effect on people at their most pliable age?
Come the fuck on, what kind of doofy-ass disphits must you be to believe that kinda clown crap?
Smartphones and social media are a huge cognitohazard, and particularly so for those 10-18.
You know what, to be perfectly honest (heh) I’d lie on my resume for $7 million all day long.
Did you know I’m the President of Space and I invented writing? Well I am and I did. Pay up.
The last person to give me a haircut did such a bad job I should be able to sue for pain and suffering.
Practically-A-Book Review: Rootclaim $100,000 Lab Leak Debate.
I did not and will never watch all 15 hours of video associated with this, though I have reviewed much of the material (prior and some more now). The lab leak hypothesis still seems far more likely as the zoonotic spillover explanation relies on an absurd level of coincidences. Which is more probable, a 200-step Rube Goldberg machine of various transmissions and transportations, or that someone at the WIV gets infected in their lab known already to have poor containment standards and spreads Covid in the town where they already live?
Hmm, I wonder.
The whole debate seems insane to me just based on Bayesian priors. And with how much the Chinese contaminated all the evidence and mounted an absolutely enormous propaganda operation to conceal what really occurred, how does the zoonotic origin seem at all likely?
Being spiny, prickly, grumpy and thorny by nature has really optimized me for this era of scams. I don’t give a fuck who you say you are or even if you are truly someone official. I’m not giving you any damn thing.
Talk to the hand, or my motherfucking lawyer.
We finally did the right thing and approved aid to Ukraine (still has to be approved by the Senate, which is almost certain). I’m glad it will help Ukraine and I almost hate to say this but it’s true: even if Ukraine can’t stop Russia, the longer we can keep Russia tied down in Ukraine the better. This will keep them from attempting to take the Baltic states and Poland for as long as possible.
The nightmare scenario is war against China and Russia at the same time. That is fairly likely. Anything at all that can be done to avoid this is best. Ukraine aid helps avert that if nothing else.
Obama was a far worse fraud and conman than trump because Trump is so obvious about it. Obama screwed up the nation beyond repair. Trump just continued the decline with a farcical version of Obama’s sly guile.
She’s so crazy good.
I secretly think that gerbils, guinea pigs and hamsters are the same animal. They just give it different hairstyles to trick us.
