Mind the Gap Gap

The Bradford nurse who married train driver who saved her life.

Great story, but Gen Z would see this as “sus” and harassment as a man talked to a strange woman in public. And there is an age gap.

Therefore, in their minds, he should have just let her off herself. To avoid any appearance of impropriety of course.

Lord, if I were single I’d date a 23-year-old just to piss those clowns off. And so I could drink her blood to rejuvenate myself1.

  1. That blood part is intended to be funny, cuz no one can tell anymore.

Career advice: find your superpower, if you have one, and capitalize on that. To be fair, that only works for a few. Mine is understanding and making use of complex information very, very quickly.

Failing that, the best strategy to pursue (I stole this from somewhere, but forget the origin) is to be okay to good in several disparate but related areas. Most of your peers won’t take the time and effort to do this and instead they’ll only be competent in one small area. This makes them limited. Even though I do in fact have a superpower, I’ve relied more on this “many skills” strategy as it’s more beneficial in my specific field. For instance apart from my technical skills I am good at these things, all of which I am not a “natural” at (that is, I had to learn them from scratch):

  • How to talk to executives and management in terms they understand
  • Good social skills, especially as it relates to the norms of the corporate world
  • Ability to distill information so the less competent/technical can act on it
  • Understanding how a business works
  • Negotiation of conflicting parties
  • Various regulatory and compliance regimes and how they apply to business
  • Perception management for me and my team
  • Learning how to prioritize what matters to execs
  • How to write a decent business analysis

And learning none of this to a “good enough” level requires being a genius! Just perseverance. That’s the advantage of the latter strategy — it just takes some determination. It’s like working out in that if you devote a couple of extra hours a week to acquiring 3-4 of the above you’ll be far ahead of your competition. Anyone can do it if they want to and I can guarantee it’ll benefit them.

This is exactly what I did and it’s why I am where I am.

Reasonable Evil

I got to see a glimpse of the evil that lives in “reasonable” people when they began cheering on Russia to crush Ukraine and commit genocide on the Ukrainian people.

Because it somehow in their minds harmed the US. Even for the “progressives,” a genocide being a negative thing is contingent on who is being exterminated.

Human nature kinda sucks.

Cassandra

Now I know what the people felt like warning before WWII that the world was on the brink of a major conflagration and no one listening.

We are there again and again no one pays even a bit of a attention. Well, not no one. Very few and even they don’t treat it seriously. This is not gonna be pretty.

Identity Deformation

How and why do people get their identities so wrapped up in their jobs? I like my job and I’m good at it; I do quality work. But to be perfectly honest, if I lost my job tomorrow it’d be nothing to me. The next day would just be another day, but with more free time.

Yes, it certainly helps to have money but I’m not talking about that. Even people who have adequate emergency funds etc. seem to have their entire character and being deeply enmeshed in their job. And I just can’t understand. I think watching my dad get laid off in the 1980s cured me of that right quick, and at a young age.

YouTube Voice

Even when it’s not AI, why do people on YouTube use that monotone uninflected “YouTube voice?” It’s even worse than “podcast voice,” which I fucking despise. Yet another reason never to listen to those turds.

Is it just attempting to mimic AI, because people expect that? Is it for ease of transcription? Even vids on there I might want to watch I just grow so so sick of them due to that damn voice.

Terms

It’s an odd liberal idea that a country can and should absorb an unlimited number of immigrants regardless of the availability of housing, the nation’s current finances, the culture of the incoming populations(s), the availability of jobs and the state of infrastructure.

This seems more like a desire to commit self-harm to me than any actual concern about the immigrants themselves. But the expiation of white guilt is of no interest to me.

CAT Maneuver

That attacking cat has better tactics than the Russian army:

1) Approaches the enemy from the weakest point.

2) Uses the strongest point of armored vehicle appropriately for shielding.

3) Attacks with decisive force while still relying on vehicle for protection.

4) Leaves vehicle in place for tactical retreat once the enemy proves too much to overmaster.

5) Does not run over self or friendlies (in this case, just self) with the CFV (Cat Fighting Vehicle) in the heat of battle.

From what I’ve seen, the Russian army cannot achieve any of these things consistently. I hope they don’t conscript this cat. They might have more success.
