I groaned when I saw the title of this โetymologyโ post on Treehugger, as a great deal of etymology is garbage. And the first one is exactly that:

Foxglove has not the first thing to do with fairies. This is some false etymology from the 1800s sometime. The โgloveโ just means nearly the same thing that โdigitalisโ means โ that its blossoms could fit over a finger. โFoxโ is just a common English name for herbs and plants for which the origin is lost.
By the way, the German name of the plant is โfingerhutโ which literally means โfinger hat.โ
