I groaned when I saw the title of this “etymology” post on Treehugger, as a great deal of etymology is garbage. And the first one is exactly that:

Foxglove has not the first thing to do with fairies. This is some false etymology from the 1800s sometime. The “glove” just means nearly the same thing that “digitalis” means — that its blossoms could fit over a finger. “Fox” is just a common English name for herbs and plants for which the origin is lost.

By the way, the German name of the plant is “fingerhut” which literally means “finger hat.”
