Agreed. I havenโ€™t yet watched the video, but the Apollo programโ€™s total cost was about $25.4 billion, or around $152 billion in todayโ€™s dollars.

As a back-of-the-envelope calculation, even assuming you could do all the tech and other development necessary to fake the moon landing in the same timeline (you could not), faking it credibly wouldโ€™ve cost something like $5 trillion โ€” which was an entire year of GDP for the US in 1963, inflation-adjusted.

So yes, the moon landing was real because it was far easier and far, far cheaper to just go there than it wouldโ€™ve been to stage it at that time.
