I don’t think I will ever understand or be on board with the modern insistence that an artist must be some exemplar of au courant morality and ethics.

I just could not care less what an artist gets up to outside of their work, as it actually relates to the work itself. I expect artists to be boundary-pushing louche louts, anyway. Tends to make them better. I guess this misplaced desire for artists to be saints partially explains why there is so much boring soporific art around lately. Compulsive moralizing never produces anything worth a damn.
