Yep. My grandfather owned three houses and bought expensive cars on a military pension and a decent state job, with three kids and a wife who didn’t work.
In today’s dollars*, all told, he made about $125,000 a year. I make a good bit more than that and I could not afford all of those things and still save for retirement. (Not counting my stock market funny money here.)
*Obviously the inflation numbers are bullshit.
