Don’t hear much advocacy for paid sick leave. Yet a low value intervention like masking kids has become the proverbial hill to die on.

My hypothesis about this is that because masking has an obvious visual signifier it’s far easier to have identity formation around this. Also, because it’s “easy” and low-cost that makes it much more likely to get wrapped up in culture-warring. On the other hand, paid sick leave is a difficult political fight that confers no status benefits, has no conspicuous identifier that signals one’s virtue, and does not often directly benefit PMC libs — so most of them don’t give a rip about it.
