Apparently I am also a fucking lawyer!
Got people today getting upset with me because I refuse to answer purely legal questions and then refer them to corporate counsel. Bro, trust me, you do not want an IT person answering legal questions that will definitely bring about liability and obligations. You. Do not. Want that.
What a day.
Some lore about me.
I tend to do the “impossible” accidentally due to social cluelessness and lack of awareness of what others think is normal. In this case, some years ago my journey into the impossible occurred as I was taking classes at a community college. I showed up, took an exam, then went outside to wait for the next one. These tests could’ve been scheduled on any day of the week (including weekends) but for ease of commuting I chose to sit for all four of them back to back. Just seemed normal to me.
As I was resting at a picnic table watching the birds, a girl I knew from one of my classes came up to me and asked, “So, which exam are you taking today?”
I said without thinking about it, “All of them.”
She looked confused for a moment and then said, “What do you mean, ‘All of them?'”
“I mean, I scheduled all four of them so I don’t have to drive here on four different days.”
“But why in the world would you do that?” she said.
It didn’t even occur to me — not even vaguely — that scheduling four fairly difficult exams back to back on the same day would be unusual or something to be remarked upon. There was not the first thought in my head about that until that moment. I mumbled something again about it being easier and quickly changed the subject.
I got As on all four, by the way. Wasn’t even a problem.
In IT, I have been in charge of chairs.
Yes, chairs. Definitely an important piece of information technology if there ever was one.
Or any assorted crap you find on the internet. AI is no different than any other tool. You don’t just copy and paste code snippets or scripts of unknown function or provenance and hope for the best, no matter where they come from.
My question is after this screw-up, why did it take six entire weeks to diagnose and fix? This is something I (or honestly, anyone competent) could’ve figured out in a part of an afternoon once the junior put the bad PowerShell in the SCCM baseline.
Not a hard problem. Not with all the evidence already available and easily gathered. Most people are incredibly poor troubleshooters.
What do you think about the ‘mental load’ in relationships?
Women are more neurotic by nature on average so it’ll always be a problem. This isn’t lobbing some accusation. It’s just true, like the Moon is up there in the sky and that birds have wings.
Some compromise could be made by men caring more and women laying off a bit (or a lot), but probably won’t be.
Fortunately, my partner is one of the least neurotic people in general I’ve ever met so we work together perfectly. And, well, my nickname in the army was “Chill” so that gives you some idea of how I tend to be most of the time.
I did have an ex-girlfriend ask me many years ago about some trifling matter, “How can you just not care?”
And I answered, “I look at it and think, I just don’t give a crap” and then never think about it again. Easy.
In another place that most people usually look bad — their driver’s license photos — my partner manages to look like a glorious goddess on a casual modeling shoot.
Meanwhile, I’m over here with a mug like a demented somewhat dimwitted demon in mine. I have no idea how she does it. She’d also look amazing in her booking photo too, I have no doubt.
I’m a lucky dude, to say the very least.
The tenure of an IT person at any one company is limited, especially if you fill a lot of roles, as I do.
Because increasingly your job becomes saying “no” to moronic, unsafe and insecure ideas — and that then pisses off a lot of people. When you enrage a critical mass of people by refusing to implement their dangerous projects and plans, your job is at risk.
They subsequently hire someone more compliant, and the process repeats.
Love it when people assign stuff to my team with due dates in the past.
Nothing like being set up for total success!
LOL at giving Domain Admin rights to a summer intern. That’s amazing.
At a previous role where we had interns, we didn’t even give them login rights to anything but their own PCs. And even then, they had no local admin access.
Interns mostly don’t know anything. Giving them access to much is very dangerous as they want to be helpful but that often leads to “helpful” disasters. As this person is finding out.
