Adamantly Wrong

It feels sort of wrong to criticize it as I have not read it and will never read it, but Ada Palmer has a deeply stupid book out arguing that the Renaissance was fake.

Fucking Christ.

No one — literally no one — believes that the Renaissance was some golden age. When your entire work is arguing against a straw man why write it in the first place? Most educated people know that time period was one of conflict, massive social change, and unrest. The era also saw huge innovations in art, proto-science and political organization. In fact, there was far more change in a roughly 200 year period than there had been in the previous thousand years of Western civilization.

In a tortuous series of events, this denial of the obvious is at least partly (perhaps wholly) the result of broken academic anti-racism crusades. Here’s how it happened: To fight racism, scholars who wanted to keep their jobs started believing two things:

1) That if there is a continuous gradation, then there is no difference between any two items in the distribution. In their view, a mountain is the same as a molehill with no relevant distinctions1. One can see how this specious line of thinking could be used to battle racism (and it was).

2) That no culture should be judged for any reason, no matter how vile.

Combine these two and you get wacky-ass shit like believing the Western Roman empire never fell and that the Renaissance was fake news. This, however, is a terrible way to do scholarship or to understand the past. Under this chowder-headed view, nothing of consequence has ever happened and no culture is better than any other.

Both obviously extremely false assertions.

  1. Topologists, shut up. Y’all are different.

AITA for telling a stranger to mind their own business?

Maybe it’s just my remnant North Florida showing, but if some stranger was taking photos of my dog and possibly my kid in my yard I’d certainly tell them to mind their own business. Why do so many people think that’s so outrรฉ? Is it because there is a dog involved and all the canine cultists showed up? (You know, the ones who value dogs over people.)

Back in my day, that sort of behavior where I grew up would get you some warning shots and perhaps actually shot.

I don’t think that’s warranted and I do not behave that way myself any longer, but just letting you know where I’m coming from (figuratively and literally).

If someone is taking pictures of pets and family members in my own yard, you’re damn right I’m telling them to fuck off.

How is that controversial?

No Mutuality

We need to do something about straight women’s misery in their hetero relationships.

The thing is, most men are just as miserable if not more so — and for good reason. I’ve seen it myself. Men are just a lot better at hiding it, because they must.

Neither gender is doing well. Too many women have expectations that no one and nothing alive can meet. Meanwhile, men treat their women partners as servants or bangmaids. Women resent being treated this way and men with equal justification begrudge the fact that women will punish them severely if they express the least emotion or doubt.

I have no idea why most het couples stay together. None. They all treat each other so terribly. And yes, women are just as guilty as men — I’d argue women are now even worse than men since feminism turned so toxic. Though the responsibility is still quite shared, to be clear!

AI Hire or Lower

This wasn’t just corporate shills, though there were plenty of them. Despite the fact that AI has been used in all ATS platforms extensively for years now, clowns would climb down from the rafters to tell you how absurd it was that AI was being used anywhere.

I wonder why this propaganda op was so important, and why it was so successful?

By the way, I have firsthand knowledge of this, and yes ATSes and related systems (and hiring managers) use AI all over the place to sort, reject and classify candidates.

Grow

Degrowtherism is rife on both the right and the left now. It presents itself differently as it refracts through the various prisms of ideology and misapprehension of the world, but it all results in the same thing: a zero sum take on human affairs and the future of our species in the cosmos.

I despise all degrowthers, no matter where they fall on the political spectrum.

The Cycle of IT Life

The tenure of an IT person at any one company is limited, especially if you fill a lot of roles, as I do.

Because increasingly your job becomes saying “no” to moronic, unsafe and insecure ideas — and that then pisses off a lot of people. When you enrage a critical mass of people by refusing to implement their dangerous projects and plans, your job is at risk.

They subsequently hire someone more compliant, and the process repeats.

Three Six

I was reading at 3. I could read but not fully understand National Geographic, Scientific American and other magazines at 4-5.

At seven, I could read and fully comprehend any adult books and magazines. I read Moby Dick at age eight and loved it.

Fuck that clown.

Tricky Rikki

Married special education teacher pleads guilty to sending nudes to student on Snapchat.

I’ve noticed that the women who do this sort of crap are almost always super attractive. Like, she’s even really beautiful in her booking photo and almost no one looks good there.

My theory is that (as is true with almost all women that attractive) they are accustomed to getting away with nearly anything in life…until they don’t.

Oops.

(Also, I know it’s the NYP trash rag, but the swimsuit photos of her are totally unnecessary. Lord.)
