Even some blogs I like on Tumblr are full of some daft bullshit.
So letโs extend this further:
1) No one who is not Hutu should blog/write/show images of the Rwandan genocide. Yeah, thatโll help!
2) No one who is not Armenian should mention the Armenian genocide because thatโsโฆcultural appropriation? Iโm not sure what this idiotโs point is, exactly.
This is the danger of identity politics. I know, itโs lefty suicide to rail against identity politics, but how itโs practiced is an instantiation and perfect example of the rightโs divide and conquer politics it has used successfully in the US for over 150 years.
The professional right actually loves identity politics and encourages it because leads to these sort of divisions.
I donโt even know what my heritage is other than mostly white, so I am not sure what I am โallowedโ to write about exactly.
Nor do I fucking care because I will write about what I want.
It’s also lefty suicide not to rail against identity politics, as you point out. It seems like the left can’t win. Still, there may be hope. It may be that the divisions that the professional right loves so much are actually a strength, because internal debate can make us stronger. That of course would assume that feedback is dealt with constructively at least some of the time, which is a big if, but I’m assuming the median age of Tumblr users is well south of 18, and that the vast majority will outgrow the emo kid stage or whatever it is. You’re pretty thick-skinned when it comes to “accusations,” which is 90% of the constructive criticism soft skill right there. Tumbler is basically Livejournal circa 2007. It appears to be mostly anonymous/pseudonymous, so I don’t take it too seriously.
