Your business model

Iโ€™ve seen repeated justifications for the idea that I should do or not do something because someoneโ€™s business model will suffer due to my actions or lack thereof.

Fuck your business model.

I donโ€™t give a crap about your business model.

I should look at ads on the web because itโ€™s the business model? Who cares. Itโ€™s a terrible business model that makes my life worse. Iโ€™ll look at your ad when you pay for my $3,000 computer and screen to look at your virus-spewing bullshit. You know what? I see about one ad a year and itโ€™s great.

Whatโ€™s that you say, thereโ€™d be less content on the web if no one looked at ads? So be it. Something better will then develop as itโ€™s not like weโ€™ll just abandon the web if ads disappear.

I remember it before it had ads, and you know what? It was better.

The car dealership business model will suffer if I buy a car direct from Tesla? Sounds good to me. Iโ€™d buy 3-4 if I could afford it.

Your business model ainโ€™t got a single reason I should do a goddamn thing. Nor will I.

  1. I think there are a lot of corollaries with ad driven websites and email spam. Both are unwanted, wasting your bandwidth/mental space, but the people who send out spam don’t have much social or political power, so no one questions using spam blockers. The people who run ad networks have more power and get respect when they say โ€œIt’s my business modelโ€ even though their model also makes the world a worse place.
