Expensive if

By the way, all yaโ€™ll complaing about how expensive the new Retina 5K iMac is, consider that when the 30-inch Cinema Display debuted a bit over 10 years go it was $3,300 โ€” over $800 more than the base 5K iMac ignoring inflation โ€” and it was only a display. And that was first monitor of its size and type aimed at consumers, not just the pro market (and those were $7,000+ at the time).

My Retina 5K iMac is 10x better display quality, and a very fast computer. In fact, itโ€™s about 2 times faster than the computer I was using only a few years ago.

This lovely beast is the best deal Iโ€™ve gotten on a computer ever. This display is to die for. Like seriously, I mean if someone tried to steal it, theyโ€™d die for it.

Anyway, if you want to and are a moron, you can pay $2,500 โ€” the same price I paid for my iMac โ€” and get the 5K display only from Dell. No computer. Just display.

Like I said, if youโ€™re a moron.

And hereโ€™s the thing. Itโ€™s made by Dell, so the build quality is going to be way, way worse. And the backlights will be lower quality and there will be screen bleed. And probably busted-ass stuck pixels.

Whatโ€™s that, Appleโ€™s always the most expensive?

See the part about being a moron above.

But this is funny. Itโ€™s a the original Mac screen (which was larger than most other consumer screens at the time in 1984* by the way) overlaid on the Retina 5K iMac screen resolution/size.

Amazing how far weโ€™ve come.

*In 1984, I think I was still using a 280ร—192 or possibly 320ร—240 display.
