Mate prefs

Itโ€™s hardly worth writing about because it wonโ€™t amount to anything without a huge genetic-level change in human nature, but itโ€™s hard to believe how many FA types and parts of the feminist (?) movement are telling people itโ€™s wrong to have sexual and mate preferences.

Yeah, thatโ€™s never, ever, ever ever gonna work. Ever.

  1. Their arguments are wrong, but I am sympathetic to them. I think it’s more productive and interesting to think about how our drives and behaviors interact with the culture we create. I do think it’s reasonable to attempt to change our culture, even if our current individual preferences cannot, if they are causing things we think are bad.

I mean, we have gay marriage now, but would we have the category gay at all marriage hadn’t developed into this property and paternity thing? Countless married women are in therapy or getting drugs for low libido, but the problem goes away when they have new relationships. Is this an entire “medical problem” caused by expectations of long term monogamy? Also kink. Geez there’s a lot there.

    • Culture change can be powerful — that is a good goal. But a lot of our mate and sexual preferences are set very early and are nearly impossible to change. So arguing with individual people why it’s wrong to like blondes, or to be attracted to biker dudes, or not be attracted to obese people (or vice versa in some cases) is so futile it borders on comical. That actually harms their goals, not helps them.

But a lot of what most people do (including me at times) is counterproductive due to poor optimization of humans to their current environs culturally and technologically.
