I heard a guy at work today say that heโd โbeen to Chinaโ and โdidnโt like Asians.โ
What the fuck.
Iโve been to the Middle East and hated the place โ mainly due to the treatment of women โ but by no means would I say that I โhate all Middle Easterners,โ etc.
I found people there to be about like people everywhere, really.
Donโt misread me โ cultural differences matter. Thereโs a reason I donโt think itโs a good idea to allow a million virulently woman-hating men into your country. Thatโs a terrible idea just on the face of it, especially if you are a woman.
But donโt like all Asians? What does that even mean? How can that come out of anyoneโs mouth as a serious statement?

“I decided that based on my experience with Chinese people when I visited, my heuristic is going to be ‘I don’t like Asians’ because the ‘Chinese’ I met are fungible with ‘all Asians’ and evaluating non white people I’m already biased against on an individual level is too exhausting for my brain and I don’t wanna. I can say this because I’m white and you’re white and we understand each other and others won’t challenge my bullshit to my face. #AllAsians”
Oh wait, I assumed the guy was white based on who I’ve known to make those kind of statements casually and my conception of who works at tech companies. You didn’t actually say he was white at all. Ha!
Yeah, he was white.
And German!
