  1. I’m not taking a 20k paycut for anything that would result in my increased productivity. Faced with that kind of choice, I would work for myself where the benefits of my increased productivity would accrue directly to me instead of my shitty stupid employer or change jobs. It simply doesn’t make sense unless I’m making 200k and then I drop to 180k, minimum.

    • Working for myself solely is too risk-ridden, but making my office environment more pleasant for myself is worth 20K easily. Though I’d rather work from home, which I could do 90% of the time in my current job.

  2. Well, yes working for yourself is risky. I guess this is my way of saying that I’m only willing to cut my own pay so much, proportionally speaking. It’s unlikely that creating my own office and carving out real estate in a floor plan would even cost 20k so I would refuse to take that much of a pay cut. If it actually did cost that much to do, it’s like me trying to find a co-working space and rent an office and pay for home office expenses, so again, why?

Perhaps it’s irrational, but I don’t trust people who want me to take a pay cut in exchange for better working conditions. You assume ok working conditions that would be optimized; I assume suboptimal conditions that would be made slightly better. I worked for someone once who wanted me to 1)upgrade my phone plan so he could call me whenever where ever with whatever random thoughts popped into his head and while he 2)cut my pay 11%, which I refused because the pay was already crappy. He and his company went under and he and his partner accused each other of embezzlement. It was spectacular.
