I just realized in 21 years, I've never worked at a company where I saw an engineer get a promotion except Google. And at Google, you basically have to move a mountain to get one if you're senior. I think everywhere else people just find new jobs for promotions. ๐ค

With rare exception, the only way to get promotions and pay raises is to job hop, go somewhere else. Thatโs just the way it is. Iโve thought over the years about why thatโs the case.
One reason is status quo bias. People see you in a role and they assume you arenโt then capable of anything else. Therefore, no chance to move up. Must go elsewhere so people see you with fresh eyes.
