One pronounces
12^2 “twelve squared” and
12^3 “twelve cubed” but
12^4 as “twelve to the fourth”.
The powers 2 and 3 are not cited as numbers but as geometric figures, for obvious reasons, but still, one doesn’t realize that one is not pronouncing the number itself.
