The human toll is so much worse, but I was hoping to see that plane in person one day. Ars longa, vita brevis.

I recently saw an exceptional early career scholar and mother of two young kids (one born in 2021) write on social media โI didnโt do well enough at work to get a cost-of-living increase last year.โ I canโt get over it. This is a thread for academic people who decide raises. 1/n
— Thad Leffingwell, Ph.D. (@thadlab) March 13, 2022
Academia is such a scam. I see someone in that thread talking about a 1.5% merit raise. Bros and bro-ettes, inflation was 7% in the past year. If you aren’t getting that, you’re getting poorer.
But this was all part of the lockdown plan — making everyone poorer while the oligarchs got massively richer. And it worked fine and is still functioning as intended.
Still negative at least 60 hours after landingโฆ is it actually possible to evade Omicron? pic.twitter.com/4bEMlR1Cbp

I’ve done all kindsa shit, traveled all over the place, and seen all kindsa people and I have never had Omicron.
China is shutting down a lot of container shipping capacity and such like that due to Covid lockdowns, so supply chains are about to get worse and things are gonna get even scarcer and more expensive.
It’s a self-reinforcing problem, too. As a driver, I drove a car for years. Starting around 2015, I began noticing that EVERYONE else drove an SUV. LED Headlights at eye level = not fun. So, I upgraded…to an SUV.

I drive a large sedan that weighs nearly 4,000 pounds. Objectively, it’s a huge car. The trunk is immense; I could fit a squad of bodies in there. But when I drive it feels tiny against 6,000+ pound trucks that loom more than three feet higher than it is. Often, I can see nothing around me.
This is not the way it should be.
Most books and movies are fairly boring these days because they are just an assemblage of unconnected didactic woke tropes arranged in a standard order. Nothing challenging is nothing challenged; the artist must stand against society as much as stand for it.

I thought that movie was just fine, far better than its reputation, but that line is one of my favorites in all of cinema.
This economist is really really digging in on the idea that inflation is not happening and not going to happen. This is a whole Type of Guy right now. https://t.co/vXuBcaQZ9W

Yeah, all these “believe me, don’t believe your lyin’ eyes and your deflatin’ wallet” types are mystifying. And the funny thing is, a lot of “smart” people are falling for this claptrap.
People like to imagine there is something else they could be without being the thing that they are. But without the thing that they are, the what that they could be is something else altogether.
Who are all these public health people supposedly arguing for no one to go anywhere or do anything ever, that mean we need so many โthinkโ pieces condemning that?
The public health people I know want governments to step up and address this pandemic like a grown-up.
How? A🧵

Those mofos are literally all over Twitter….
Jesus fucking Christ, I can’t believe dipshit mooks are trying to normalize wearing masks out in public anywhere forever at all times. Fuck that. I will literally move wherever that is not normalized, even Bunghole, Idaho.
There are so many “valid” mask studies that anyone can believe anything they want about masking and they’re all right!
My personal belief is that masking does work, but is not as effective as libs believe and only works well in ideal conditions. It’s not the panacea portrayed, but can be effective in some situations of long exposure with vulnerable populations.

Lordamercy. I’m bad at math, but those people are lower level bad. Damn.
Read this thread. The fact is, Russia simply didn't bring enough guys to conquer Ukraine.
The only thing they can do is try to terrorize Ukraine into submission — which is simply not likely to happen. https://t.co/fGSpkImaF7
— Noah Smith 🐇🇺🇦 (@Noahpinion) March 13, 2022
No, they didn’t bring enough people or materiel. I’ve already said it would’ve taken a million personnel and they have ~200,000. That’s enough to destroy Ukraine, though. Not enough to occupy it, really, but yeah they can tear it down. And will.
