Lie Up

I miss the period from roughly 1988-2003 when you could treat grown-ass women like adults and not like little kids.

Can we go back to that? Why do so many women even want to be treated like children? I just do not get it. I know, I know, they want all the advantages of both, but it won’t work out like that — no matter what lies “feminists” are telling them.

Defwom

The mental health crisis among men is the only one where the solution always seems to be โ€œmen need to change,โ€ whereas the solution to every other groups mental health crisis is โ€œeveryone else needs to change around them.โ€ Why is this?

That’s because in the West currently, men are seen as defective women. This works about as well as you’d expect — which is not well at all. Men have their issues but none of them are that we are not in fact women.

Part of this (referring to the original question) is an overreaction. For a very long time men did really have pretty tight control of society and women very little at all. That has changed, and in many ways women control the cultural conversation and direction now. Thus, the push to make men be more like women rather than for equality.

It’s better than how it used to be, to be fair, but still not ideal especially for men who just can’t fit this mold.

Few and Far Between

Can’t believe I found this. I watched this when it aired on TV in 1993.

I usually don’t care much for horns but those horn players are really killing it and add a lot to the song live. And that drummer…he’s playing ’em like he stole ’em.

I had this on VHS long ago, and now long lost.

White Bread

A lot of picky eaters seem to have a lot of health problems too. I wonder which way the causality goes there? Is it that picky eating (some of them eat only chicken nuggets and white bread) causes malnutrition? Or is it these pickitarians already have some kinda weirdo stuff going on (using very technical medial terms here) and that causes the eating like a damn three-year-old?

Either way, picky eaters are hella annoying.

Puritan Turn

Dang, it was weird how a lot of people believed that a relatively-mild disease to which we now have vaccines meant that everyone should basically stay locked inside forever, wasn’t it?

I mean that’s weird, right? I think it’s weird, and I like inside.

To be less flip, I think a lot of the above has to do with the creeping neo-Puritanism of our age, and the extremely low tolerance for risk we have developed. Judging from Twitter the pandemic basically turned a lot of left-y people into self-martyring Howard Hughes figures, content to sit in their small apartments, washing grocery packages off post-delivery and clucking their tongues at anyone who dared to do something bad like go to the beach or walk down the street outside sans mask.

It’s all very performative, too, of course. But much of it is sincere — those people truly are scared in a way that’s impossible for those of us not galvanized by fear to understand. I would feel sympathy for them, but I also hate them too much to really do that.

Tattered

I’m considering breaking up with my girlfriend over the fact she keeps getting tattooed.

Break up immediately. There is no reason to be with someone you’re not attacted to over deliberate choices she’s making herself to make her less attractive.

If a romantic partner of mine (not a friend) got a tattoo, I’d break up that instant. Yes I am serious. No I do not care what anyone thinks about it. And it’s damn weird how a lot of people with tattoos seem to think I should find them attractive for some reason. Like, fucking nope? I don’t find women with bowl cuts attractive either, y’all gonna start lecturing about that?

Note that this does not apply to friends — I am only talking about romantic partners here.

Nine Days in the Valley

Google Kubernetes Engine incident spanning 9 days.

LOL@ nine days of outages. Kubernetes sucks and containerization is a dead end. This shows exactly why. It is an overcomplex mess designed by complete fucking clowns who did not understand the problems they were attempting to solve nor what the best solutions would be if they even understood the problems in the first place.

This is the failure mode of smart people. They believe slinging complexity at something is always the best answer, because they have the horsepower to do so. It so rarely is the solution, though. But nothing can convince them of that however because most of it is intellectual showboating to impress other smart people.

And then you end up with something like Kubernetes and similar.

Gay Times

As a straight man, have you ever had a woman label you “gay” for rejecting her advances? How did you respond?

I think this has happened to nearly every straight man alive at least once. It goes back to the myth* that all men are unthinking sex beasts and would have intercourse with a radish if it wore some lipstick and looked at us fetchingly.

If I were dating, though, I’d reject anyone with a tattoo or a terrible personality, which is 95%+ of women out there (and even more men, to be fair). So that’s a lot of “being gay” I’d experience I guess.

*Women believe this because ~5% of men are in fact unthinking sex beasts, and women get hit on 99% of the time by these serial pesterers and think that is all men (for some reason).
