On Da Train

Who should be responsible for training users?

Weirdly, the IT department is often responsible for training users on nearly everything โ€” even areas that have 0.0% to do with computers other than a computer is involved somewhere or other peripherally. Itโ€™s odd. Iโ€™ve trained lawyers on how to do legal-related items they should 100% know how to do. Iโ€™ve shown accountants how to do accounting work. Iโ€™ve shown other professionals how to achieve things that were absolutely in no way in my bailiwick and I have should absolutely zero knowledge about.

These days, I fully refuse to conduct this sort of training. I am not a lawyer or an accountant or a nurse. But the problem, as Iโ€™ve observed before, is that the IT department often has the only generally competent people within it so they become a dumping ground for anything at all that requires any sort of abstract thinking or anything other than rote procedure following.

Donโ€™t do this sort of training. It is the managerโ€™s responsibility, not ITโ€™s, to show a lawyer how to lawyer and the like.
