Tell us: what is the nicest thing anyone has done for you?

When I was hanging out my now-dead friend so much that we were nearly conjoined twins, a group of the popular high school kids came up to her. One said, “You know, you could be pretty cool if you would just stop hanging out with that total loser.” Referring, of course, to me.

She told them that she was quite happy hanging out this “loser” who treated her better than they ever had or could, and that she had no plans to change who she associated with. Not a single person outside of my family had ever stuck up for me in my entire life before that. I was awed by and grateful for her kindness and strength. I barely even knew what to say later.

That is the single nicest thing anyone has ever done for me. And she did it without a moment’s thought. I still cannot believe how incredibly kind she was or that she is dead.
