My guess is autopilot shenanigans. Someone might’ve activated a trim control accidentally, disengaging the autopilot. I believe the 787 has an audible alarm for autopilot disengage but maybe the pilots missed it.

Anyway, if you don’t have a neutral yoke position and you disengage autopilot while you’re flying in the coffin corner, bad things are gonna happen fast. And they did.
