The internet was under control before social media and smartphones.
You needed to sit in front of a computer, so it was not in your hand, and it didn't mean you had instant communication with everybody (and ways to screen the population).

All the while the social media/smartphone addicts claim it’s not a problem, they could quit anytime they like, man; meanwhile, take away their smartphone for two minutes and they are twitching like heroin fiends hours away from their next fix.
It’d be comedic if it were not so sad. And so obvious. The smartphone/social media combination is a cognitohazard for which we are wholly unprepared.
