Goddesses and Demons

In another place that most people usually look bad — their driver’s license photos — my partner manages to look like a glorious goddess on a casual modeling shoot.

Meanwhile, I’m over here with a mug like a demented somewhat dimwitted demon in mine. I have no idea how she does it. She’d also look amazing in her booking photo too, I have no doubt.

I’m a lucky dude, to say the very least.

Quiet Content

Notice that China is being a lot quieter and more reticent now. Though they have made their own mistakes, they are smart enough to dial it back while their rival self-destructs.

As long as we do their work for them, they will bide their time and let the MAGA doofs and associated idiots destroy the nation.

It’s what I’d do in their place as well, to be fair. As I’ve said before, the wise do not interrupt an enemy when it’s making a mistake.

The Cycle of IT Life

The tenure of an IT person at any one company is limited, especially if you fill a lot of roles, as I do.

Because increasingly your job becomes saying “no” to moronic, unsafe and insecure ideas — and that then pisses off a lot of people. When you enrage a critical mass of people by refusing to implement their dangerous projects and plans, your job is at risk.

They subsequently hire someone more compliant, and the process repeats.

Three Six

I was reading at 3. I could read but not fully understand National Geographic, Scientific American and other magazines at 4-5.

At seven, I could read and fully comprehend any adult books and magazines. I read Moby Dick at age eight and loved it.

Fuck that clown.

Tricky Rikki

Married special education teacher pleads guilty to sending nudes to student on Snapchat.

I’ve noticed that the women who do this sort of crap are almost always super attractive. Like, she’s even really beautiful in her booking photo and almost no one looks good there.

My theory is that (as is true with almost all women that attractive) they are accustomed to getting away with nearly anything in life…until they don’t.

Oops.

(Also, I know it’s the NYP trash rag, but the swimsuit photos of her are totally unnecessary. Lord.)

MacGyver

My dad and I were so different we did not and never could’ve understood one another, but he was a mechanical genius (as I alluded to in my post below). In a different timeline, he should’ve been doing much bigger things.

One time I saw him repair MacGyver style the single mother’s car who lived down the road using wire from a clothes hanger, some rubber, a few oddball screws he had around, and some kind of metal bond stuff. It was going to be a $400 repair at an actual shop — a whole damn lot for a single mom in North Florida in the 1980s. This was around 1985, so that’d be $1,200 now.

He charged her, “Tell some other people who have a bit of money or something to trade to come see me when they have car trouble.” And it worked! I know of at least half a dozen people she referred. There were probably more. My dad was no saint at all, but he did try to help in his own way.

Poor One Out

Tell me you grew up poor without telling me you grew up poor.

  • Bowls, plates and glasses from dog food bags.
  • Knives from the 1940s with rotting wood handles.
  • Trailer park.
  • A good week was when you got the brand-name hot dogs. A bad week is when there was only old bread in the refrigerator.
  • Family car repossessed.
  • K-Mart clothes and shoes that fell apart in weeks.

Seeing my dad build a go-kart from a discarded lawn mower engine from the dump, some sheet metal, some lawn mower tires (also discards) as well as some metal tubes was pretty cool though. We never could’ve afforded one otherwise. He was ridiculously good at things like that.

Emily Kinney – Be Good

I actually like Emily’s version better than the Waxahatchee original. Just has a little more melancholy and whimsy. And is much better-recorded and less repetitive.

And Beth! We miss you1! She was my second-favorite character on The Walking Dead. When she died I stopped watching the show for months. Emily did such a great job with her portrayal of Beth. It’s rare that an actor can play someone who is a bit naรฏve while also having them be realistically strong and capable. And demonstrating growth over time.

  1. Emily Kinney played Beth.
